It's pretty wild. The time comparison for their test computation of Willow vs. "classical supercomputer" was mind-boggling. It's a ways off, but the implications of that for our entire way of securing the internet are insane. This thing would crack our encryption in minutes.
Damn, and I thought it was a good thing 😉
Haha, well I don't mean to fear-monger...it's just the way I quantify things.
It still relies on a quality input argument that would return a quality output conclusion, if it’s to be useful. As for an efficient quantum-classical computational creation, just use your head. That’s funky organics.
i would be less enthusiastic .. It's nice progress but there are few BUT's (do not mess with butts :-D
quantum computer will be not replacement for traditional computer .. there is still entire huge set of computations for which QC is simply not suitable and classical computer (with bits) will work always better for those
for this demo they did not use any usefull real workd calculation - they just did something which has no use it real world, they use calculation which is in particular optimised for QC
I you hear somebody talking about quantum pomputers and AI, you know that he has zero clue... no, AI models will realy NOT run on quantum computers, it's exactly that completely different use case ...
So it's cool.. mostly for scientific use cases (calculation of protein folding, simulation of - obviously - quantum systems behaviour, evolution of wave function for complex quantum systems) - which of course may dramatically shift scientific progress in ares of developing new meta-materials, cures fordiseasing, longevity, shit like that.
But do not think about QC as next generation of computing, as replacement for current computers. Pretty sure your phone will run on traditional binary-logic based chips even 30 years from now (or the brain chip which replaces phones), not on quantum chip :-)
For scientists and engineers it's massive tool, though. Or it WILL BE, few years from now.
Also no, it's really NOT threat for Bitcoin on crypto in general as some people will tell you. Bitcoin and crypto can relatively easily adopt and migrate to some quantum resistant algo much easier than other areas (like traditional banking). Maybe only one funny result will be that first person who develops QC capable of breaking SHA256 function will get access to 1000000 BTC which are untouched for more than decated in Satoshi Nakakomoto's wallet :-)))) So.. when those coins starts moving, we know somebody in world has working full blown quantum computer capable of break your emails, your bank, government secret services, entire secure internet, simply everything :-D :-D :-D
So AI is getting some bad rep and the new rage is quantum computing? Wake me up when they find a portal to the multiverse
We are already in that portal, living it.

Edit. In checking the link just now, it said I’d reached my free article limit for this month and wouldn’t show me the whole article - it let me read the whole thing last night though. Hopefully it’ll let you read it all if you’re interested
