Unattended Ambient - 1

This is an area I've been somewhat fascinated with for a while: unattended ambient music.

It's an interesting workflow: setting up and going through very detailed tweaking, then letting it run and hoping you've given it a good framework to unfold in. Resisting the urge to go and adjust some knobs, "fix" some modulation, etc. is sometimes intense.

The iPad is running:
Mass
RingsRX
Enso

...hosted in AUM. The primary voice output is sent to the modular, which is doing a crapload of FX and other processing (mostly filtering and slight bit of overdrive). Enso is continuously live looping the whole thing, and playing back down 1 octave and reversed.

So far this is beautiful! I'm still listening.

    Edit: Satisfying start to finish!

  • Sounds great, a bit on the long side maybe. I gave it 6, got stuff to do Tom, sorry ..😆

Haha, thanks. Just wait for the 1-hour versions.

  • 15 minutes well spent here. This is beautiful.

Wow. I love this concept. And your mobile rig. Inspiring stuff. :) Especially as I’m thinking of developing some longer form pieces myself, for different use cases to my usual vaguely track length things. (I’m thinking 8 hour sleep/study background ambience.) I’m guessing you have to make sure no one makes off with the case though!

  • Very nice Tom, and sweet rig indeed, especially that military looking case!

  • Listened! Enjoyed it. I am a sucker for longer pieces. & Thank you for sharing @tom_ward

I can’t quite put my finger on it but is this pic in the video of a rig a miniature? Or AI?

  • Nice relaxing ambience.. and cool rig you’ve got there @tom_ward (Jelly!)

It's definitely been a process developing longer works like this. The hurdle for me has been figuring out how to have some kind of structure that doesn't eventually sound like it's repeating too much. Looking forward to hearing your longer pieces when you've found the secret!

...and I definitely never go more than 5 feet away from this case haha.

Thanks, Gav! This case is the best $37 I've spent on gear (if you don't count the time and parts used to modify it).

Cool! What makes the Video feel so otherworldly? Aside from the obvious ambient soundtrack. Maybe I’m trippin! Well done either way.

I shot it with a 50mm lens and a really shallow depth of field, which is why a lot of it is out of focus to varying degrees. I also removed some of the color contrast while editing to give it more of that dreamy haze kind of look. That and probably just the generally earthy tones of the environment.

  • This is my jam!

Great work @tom_ward loving that case and the iPad case too…

I love setting up ‘systems’ like this in AUM and letting them run…
90% of my ambient jams exist in this form.

    :)

  • I like the concept. Is there any way to add random key changes? It might be fun to invite forum members to overlay solos. Get as many as possible for a wide variety and have them send to you for a final mix. Just a thought.

Thanks! I've been having a lot of fun with this workflow, too. I've found AUM really conducive to this type of setup, but also have been getting more intentional about building out a workflow in Loopy Pro as well, to take advantage of the enhanced live looping compared to what I'm doing with Enso here.

Thank you! Mass has a way to perform random key changes, although it's not in use in this piece. I haven't been super happy with my attempts at "truly" random key changes so far...and the counter to that is repetitive key changes start becoming stale on pieces of this length (IMO). A work in progress.

I like this idea of collaboration! I'm going to put some though into that, It'd be a lot of fun I think.

We have many great composers and musicians on this forum. I won’t mention any specific names, but you probably know who I’m referring to. I think it would be a great project. Not only just fun, but something that would showcase many outstanding musicians in a great collaboration of talent.

  • Lovely work, lots happening to keep your interest but nothing too jarring 👌
I’ve done a few tracks like this also in AUM and as you say, setting it up so that it doesn’t finish too soon or just become boring is the tricky bit. I used lots of feedback loops and A2M is handy for bringing in new variations.
Rozeta Scaler is handy for forcing things to be a bit more musical.
@Paulieworld there are a few apps e.g. SnakeBud and the other buds that allow the Scale to be manipulated with something like a S&H LFO which allows you to randomise the scale. ChordJam allows scales to be randomised but you can choose a subset of the available scales.

Thanks! Yeh, preventing boredom seems to be where I spend most of my time with this type of work. I've been slowly integrating my hardware feedback loop workflow(s) in AUM little by little. I like the idea of A2M, and similar desktop tools, but I haven't gelled with them in practice. Something I will revisit one day.

In Mass you can setup a transpose event on a part's pattern trigger. If the part is in motion, it will create the effect of a S&H feeding a scale/key quantizer. You can set one axis to control the root, and the other will control the scale. It's possible to recreate both noise-fed and LFO-fed S&H effects by controlling the part's movement axes and path. Either root or scale can be disabled, if you only want to change one of them. The same setup attached to a collision event instead of the pattern trigger will detach the transpositions from musical time and reduced predictability.
