If money is an issue, I would consider getting an older, second hand mb Air which still has an SD card slot so you can expand storage with a fast 512GB SD card for example.
If you don't need a high end machine, that is.

cant go second hand, as we would have to use our credit card (which is saved for car emergencies at the moment) and miss out on the 12months interest free, but thanks for your reply :)

You could always peruse the refurbished models Apple sells (and they get new batteries and are covered by AppleCare+, which is an "insurance policy" you should always buy).

    https://www.apple.com/shop/refurbished/mac/macbook-air

Decided now. Picking a new one up tomorrow. If I take to Mac music making, might look at a more powerful Mac Mini in the future. For now this one will do….quite excited to be honest never owned a Mac before!

It solves the DAW issue for me. Though I did like Logic Pro on the iPad, Ableton is my happy place for putting all my noodles together 😎

I have 3 relatives who were PC-people their entire computing lives until they finally were exposed to Macs and experienced how good they are in comparison. They never looked back and have been macOS since. Macs being able to run Windows in emulation was a big plus for them.

Other than storage I would say you are set in terms of power for a long time.

Don’t forget that while logic for Mac costs a bit, the 90 day demo is not limited in any way, so you can try the full potential of the Mac straight away.

I had resisted for years because I thought I wanted to be more mobile and iPad was cheaper. Thing is I don’t really move from the one room much and as my gear is growing, I like the idea of having lots of different baskets for my eggs - hardware, iPad and Mac seems like if one thing fails, I still can make music while saving up for replacements. I’m still going to avoid modular though - not made of money lol

That’s handy to know thanks. I like Logic on iPad, so I will definitely be buying it on Mac when I can afford it :) I am more than likely to try Ableton in the future as well though.

It’s the best of both worlds for me, aside from a few Fors Max 4 Live devices, I just use the built-in instruments that come with Ableton and Logic, but my music is supplemented with my iOS music apps which are either recorded on the iPad, or straight in to the Mac via IDAM (plus guitar, analogue synths, band jams etc.).

Only drawback with software is it’s resale value is worth less (or nothing, in the case of apps), whereas the old synth gear I’ve been selling is actually worth more than I paid for it!!

Probably the best of my iOS apps on the Mac is Salome, works really well. The new Solderbox is great too.

I used to have the original Alchemy synth and the two fx they made long before Apple bought them. I also had one of the first Virsyn software synths. How the software has changed from those days lol

Yep Solderbox sounds really good with some decent fx. Can I load my Logic for iPad saves to Logic on Mac and if so what does it do with the tracks that use unavailable apps?

Do many people use Machine Mk3s now as I’ve seen them getting cheaper and wondered if it’s a thought for a future audio interface with some hardware control and a sort of MPC style workflow too? Not really looked at the audio interface side much, as I’m just going to use my SP404mk2 for now

I’ve got a mk3 for sale if yr interested 😄😄😄

Haven’t used it via Logic, but able to run Maschine as a VST in Live on the M1 - Maschine is a DAW in its own right, so I’m basically running a DAW within a DAW! Mostly just using it as an audio interface these days though.

  • I even bought a 8GB M1 MacMini just for audio production. Because of the MacMini M4 the prices of second hand MacMinis has dropped so got it on eBay for £300. Its mint and a absolute bargain.

Mk3 definitely has its own nice workflow I would say, practically everything can be done on the controller so it quite feels like a standalone groovebox.
The big difference is that on your laptop, you can have access to more powerful synths and better sample libraries in the terabytes range ☺️

  • Never pay Apple for more storage. Only RAM, if needed. External SSD effectively work for 99% of us.

thats good when the new models drive the older ones down. was surprised that the place i bought mine from were £150 cheaper than Apples own site, but probably clearing decks ready for the M4 Air incoming in the new year.
