Apps everyone knows, but you just *discovered*

edited December 2024 in General App Discussion

This happens to me semi regularly since i have (ahem) many apps.

This week i fired up Chordjam again after owning it for years and i finally GOT IT.

It's so fun to build progressions in, and the per note timing sliders make it really easy to find unique timings to the playing of individual chords. It's like a manual humanize function. Amazing.

Anyone else make some personally revelatory yet actually commonplace discoveries recently?

Oh cool! One of the few additive synths out there. Do you find you can craft a particular sound? Or are you happy with the presets or happy accidents?

  • Photophore Synth. A flock Synth IAA

I’m steadily getting to know what to do to make my own sounds, but happy accident generated sounds are pretty good too lol

This was the first synth app i ever bought! I remember thinking it was pretty unstable but i was still so new to ios and trying to smash things together in BM2.

You getting some unique sounds without it crashing?

I just discovered my awesome pocket sized music making device can ... be used as a telephone?

    ...

    That kinda sucks, actually. 😐

Ya, but it's all subscription based. Plus no midi. 👎🏽

I’ve always craved AU on this one. I got it a long time ago, it still sounds nice, but doesn’t necessarily fit my workflow. I still use IAA but it’s mostly with midi sequencers/workstations.

  • Nave Synth. Picked it up a couple weeks ago. IAA only. Really nice sounds.

I "discovered" Sunrizer long after it had been around. A real eye-opener!

  • After finding out that one of Jean-Michel Jarre's first synths was the EMS VCS3, I went to purchase iVCS3 and discovered I already own it! So I've been messing around with the synth and getting to know it a bit better.

LOL I’ve done that many times! Read about some app on this forum, think “Garsh, that sounds pretty cool!”, go to the app store, and see that there’s an “open” button instead of a buy button. I suspect I would be embarrassed if I discovered the number of apps I’ve purchased and then never opened 😅

  • I got Beatcutter in the most recent sale. I’ve been obsessively using it for the past week and cannot remember my life before it.

  • Caustic, it is like a mini version of Reason. I found an old android phone in the drawer a few months ago, it had caustic on it. Never really clicked with it, but that day I made a few loops and had a great time. I learned it was also released on the iPhone and still worked.

Lol, i feel like i read a post at least monthly where someone recommends an app too you that you then realized you already owned. 🫶🏼

I'm in the same boat 😂

    Same here, lol.

Exactly! All the "undiscovered gems" I instabought and never realised I had a use for until the time was right.

I bought 4 apps in the past 3 months that I haven’t used (beyond the initial open & fiddle). All four will be rediscovered at some point in the future. I recently poked around in CrystalSynthXT. I’d buy it again as AUv3, but I usually forget about it when working in my DAW. I have so many apps like that. Disconcerting to see that Audio Elements and Oval Synth have disappeared, but I didn’t use them so…. Never trust apps - commit to audio ASAP (just reminding myself).

  • The old criticism that we are an app buying cult here sometimes hits close to home. 😂

  • 😳😳😳
I never heard it put that way!
I’m in a cult and didn’t know it.
Is there an app for that?

Plenty of apps for that. 😉 From synths, to effects, to hosts, to walled gardens (Gadget, FLSM, etc). All sorts of flavours of apps for that.

  • I distinctly remember NOT getting butter synth ...yet somehow it was there.

  • Tonality here. I’ve had it for (ever?)
Put it to use this week because of a comment in a recent thread.
    Love when that happens.

Tonality is one of those apps that's so packed with functionality that i feel like i know it yet have no clue about it at the same time. Like Atom 2 piano roll.

Were you a beta tester (butter taster)?

No, when it came out I was going through a (very short) phase of not buying things just because they were on sale/intro offer because of the rather large amount of unused/unopened apps I kept getting for fear of missing out.

Butter synth is by no means the only app I have zero recollection of getting.

I must have a Rick and Morty style night person that orders on behalf of the day me!!!

I keep waking up hoping my night person already bought all the Christmas presents...

  • Garage Band

Not even joking... I tried it last like 10 years ago I'd bet. Like when it was basically new. Just installed it for the hell of it.

It actually doesn't suck! It's got AUv3 support, the clip launcher thing is actually pretty awesome. The robot musician feature(s) are pretty cool as well...

Because It's made by Apple, I'm sure in a day or two I'll be throwing my ipad against the wall because I can't figure out the hoops they expect you to jump through to do something uber basic and obvious, but for a free app...

So yea... Late as F^@% to the party I am!

  • For me GarageBand is the app that I've always known existed, but a few times a year un-discover. I keep going back to it, seeing that it still has amazing capabilities, not being able to get myself to continue using it, and then pondering for a long time over why that is.

It's the greatest app I never use.

... Well, that and the phone app, but that's a different story. 😂

Right! I’m sure I’m only using a tiny fraction of what it’s capable of but I’m confident that there are tutorials.
Also, I think it may have been a freebie when I got it. So bonus!
