When it comes to VST’s: Arturia has a Prophet VS, Cherry Audio recently dropped a CR-78 and the Linndrum is covered by Aly James VProm. I’m with MrSmileZ when it comes to samplers. On iOS we’ve got AudioLayer that is able to load EXS files, I’ve got some sample libraries from Goldbaby that I loaded in AudioLayer. The switching of presets could be made a bit easier. It would be nice if we could load EXS into Koala (or some round-robin feature).
When it comes to Audiothing on iOS, I personally would vote for some tape-style effects like phaser and flanging or something with free running tapeloops a’la Gauss (but multitrack) like the old Natlab and Radiophonic studios. Heck, even Daphne’s Oramics synth or some Lyra-8 alternative would come to mind. The problem I have with synths in general is: There is already a lot covered. There are vintage/traditional but also some experimental synths on iOS and Windows/MacOS. There already are multiple Juno’s, SH’s Prophets, CS-80’s and “Moog’s”. At the end it’s up to the developers where they spend their time on.
Update: Gforce just released IconDrum that seems to be another Linndrum emulation.
The REAL question is..if any of these were to come would it be supported?? Or would it die in sales due to pricing or being compared to something already released here? I’m all for the effort to bring them to iOS but the iOS crowd is a tough one. I’ve seen many fail once making it here for one reason or another.
The SX1000 is a difficult one to get the sound right for those of us whom had one for quite a while. The thing is most peeps had one due to lack of funds, so we put them through pedals and dodgy amps. The sound I remember was fantastic, but some of that is a memory effect and the rest is probably the fx and amp.
I will definitely buy it just because I have such fond memories of it. Will it sell? Couldn't say. If they can get it right and at the right price, then possibly it will do OK. As for other old synths, who knows how well these things sell with any synth that has competition in a forever more busy and competitive market. Most of us on here have more synths than we will ever really need.
Sure, there are other Juno plugins out there already, just like there are emulations of Wurlitzers, Philicorda, and so on. But for us, the goal is to create our own take on them. I personally think some emulations miss the mark, and we want to do them justice.
And honestly, we’re fortunate to be able to focus on what we love, without being driven purely by commercial outcomes.
The idea is simple, recreate the instruments and effects we use here in the studio as plugins, so we can have the same sound and workflow in the box.
Of course, this doesn’t mean we’ll only be doing emulations, we’re also working on new and original plugins.
I think it's often best when devs do things they themselves like, as better work is usually done when there is interest beyond the money involved
A soma cosmos and a solar 42. Those would be my choices for a synth and an effect
Love your FX and experimental apps. Keep up the good work!
