New iPad draining battery

I understand that that music apps can use a lot battery.
My iPad is a week old.
At 9am it was at 60%. Had it mostly sleeping (not charging) and just checked a few things , email etc.
All apps were closed.
By 8 pm it was at 0%.
Any reason a new device should do this?

Hard to guess, but a good first step is going to Settings -> Battery and see what it has tracked in that time window.

  • Check the graph in the battery usage under settings to see what was using up the juice during that period.

  • Forgot to mention I used an external monitor via my hub. No indication on the battery settings there. Could that be a factor?

Are you using a hub with power delivery? Are you providing enough power to the hub?

  • Yes. Charging usually when working but not always. My assumption is not always to be plugged in to slow the wear of the battery.

What powers the external monitor? Is the power coming from the hub, or from an independent power supply?

In the latest version of iOS and iPadOS your device will advise you if you need to put it into a lower maximum charge state to prevent premature battery wear. My phone just "advised" me to do this since I almost always have it plugged in. It now charges to a maximum of 80% instead of 100%.

  • I know my old Mac lost a lot of battery while sleeping when it was attached to a hub and monitor.

Also, when it's brand new it can burn power while doing a lot of background indexing and iCloud stuff for example. But that's usually done in a day or two.

Have you disconnected the iPad from the hub when not using it?

    Monitor is standard powered.
Now have it to charge 80% max.
My hub is not powered, it has pass through and plugs in to a brick.
When I plug my Novation keyboard into the hub, I guess it's pulling power from the iPad?

Just realized when plugged in last night it automatically started playing Apple Music.
Anyone know how to turn this off when plugging in?
Tutorials online are instructing me to turn off auto play - don't see it.
