"Above and Below" - another full Drambo album, this time more ambient

https://floem.bandcamp.com/album/above-and-below

Hello everyone.

I wanted to share with you my new album "Above and Below". It was made 100% in Drambo using only its modules, just like my previous album.

This time it's a bit different from what I did before. It's more ambient, calming, I would say sleepy.

The sketches for these tracks were created just before I fell asleep, when, half-conscious and out of curiosity, I experimented with slow tempos. The experiments came out more ambient, wavy and drifting. It sounded a bit aquatic, so I decided to stretch the theme. And here it is, the whole album.

Plus I'm very happy with the cover art.

I hope someone will find something they enjoy.

    I listened to the album with great attention. It is clear to me that a lot of thought and care went into its creation. Each track feels like a piece of a larger journey, gradually revealing a story through its evolving textures and moods. Most of the time I just write a couple words, but here I really feels this deserves more.

    “Above” opens the album beautifully, setting a meditative tone. Its slow, hypnotic plucked patterns interweave to create a delicate and repetitive melody. There’s a softness to it, tinged with a subtle melancholic undertone, which makes it a soothing and reflective introduction to the album.

    “Flow” picks up from there, following a similar structure but introducing a more playful energy. The addition of two new instrumental layers is tastefully done, one of which has a distinctly Vangelis-like quality: lush, cinematic, and slightly ethereal. These elements enrich the track, giving it a sense of motion and curiosity while staying true to the mood established by the opener.

    “Coast” shifts the focus, introducing a more rhythmic element that feels fresh yet super cohesive. The synth textures evoke the ebb and flow of waves, creating a sonic connection to the track’s title. While the tone leans darker or heavier in its timbre, it doesn’t feel ominous. Instead, it’s contemplative, as though inviting the listener to reflect on something vast and timeless.

    “Surface” lightens the atmosphere significantly. It has a more aerial quality, floating freely with more abstract and harmonically daring ideas. There’s a sense of exploration here, as though the track is searching for something intangible, carried by its ethereal soundscape.

    “Drift” introduces a more ominous presence, grounding the album with deeper, more resonant plucking patterns. The slow-attack, piano-like tones bring a sense of quiet sadness, counterbalanced by an angelic, brassy lead that weaves an engaging dialogue. The monotony of the bass reinforces the feeling of weight and tension, adding to the track’s compelling emotional depth.

    “Plankton” takes the listener further into abstraction, its delicate echoes leading into quiet, mysterious territory. The addition of low, resonant pads deepens the mystery, giving the track a sense of quiet grandeur. It feels like an ascent into a strange and beautiful unknown, maintaining the contemplative tone of the album while adding layers of intrigue.

    Finally, “Below” closes the album with a sonically dense and immersive soundscape. The once-prominent plucked echoes dissolve into the vast expanse of a huge, enveloping pad. It’s a fitting conclusion, evoking a descent into something profound and otherworldly. The track feels like a return to the primal, the vast and uncharted depths of this imagined world.

    Overall, the sound design throughout the album is highly consistent, and the progressive musical storytelling is wonderfully executed. While repetitive in its core patterns, the music never feels monotonous: rather, it is hypnotic and deeply evocative. To me, it conjures a vivid sense of two distinct realms in a desert world: not lifeless, but undoubtedly devoid of human presence. The album captures an alien beauty that is serene yet mysterious, and I found it to be a very well-constructed and thoroughly enjoyable experience.

    Just listen to it and support the artist if you can.

  • @jo92346 I was not expecting such a wonderful response.

    Thank you so much for taking the time to listen and for writing so many wonderful words.

    This is probably the best thing that can happen to someone who creates - to meet an attentive audience.

    I had to listen to my album again, but this time at the same time reading your posts and taking in your perspective. Super experience, thank you very much!

    Thank you again.

  • A lovely piece of work… I enjoyed the limited sound palette, made the whole album feel very cohesive .
    Favourite track was Surface but all the tracks are beautifully paced and have little fragments of melody that pull you along 🙏

  • Haven’t listened to it all yet, but from the very start this stroke me as a piece of love. Very well done!
    Post this on the beepstreet forum, if you will! I’m sure people there will love it

  • Hi

    @GeoTony :blush:
    Thanks very much for listening and your kind words. It's great that you enjoyed it.

    @pedro
    Also thanks for listening, even if it wasn't the whole thing. :) Thanks for the advice to post in the beepstreet forum. Somehow I thought the beepstreet forum was more for technical stuff and not creative stuff.

    Cool that you both listened, because I already thought this topic was buried deep. Thank you. 🙏
