What are the options for using this IR ?
    It’s over a minute long!

I believe that THAFKNAR never truncates IRs but the longer an IR is, the more demanding it is on the CPU and the more there is a benefit to large buffers. I’ve not ever run such a long IR and don’t have a sense of how much stress such a long IR would add.

  • Curious as to why a long IR would be more demanding on CPU. Isn’t it just multiplying one sample with another? I thought it could be done on a sample per sample basis, so length wouldn’t matter. What am I missing?

    Try it

Set your buffer small and load a very short IR. Make note of the CPU usage. Load a very long IR into a convolution app that doesn’t truncate long IRs. Now try.

    No.
Just kidding, I’m still just looking at this from a theoretical perspective but it isn’t as simple as I thought. Thanks

Because every input sample has to be multiplied with every sample of the IR.

(slightly simplified but that's the gist of it)

  • Thafknar supports only IRs up to 60 seconds and you will get an error message.

  • WoodVerberator loads the file but struggles to turn into a consistent reverb.

  • JAX Convolutor Pro loads and performs like a champ.

  • Convolver module in Drambo loads it and sounds fine.

Btw I just happened to listen to this earlier today.

  • Shouldn't you just freeze the reverb if you want something that long on your computing device?

  • AltiSpace 2 sounds gorgeous but is capped at 15 seconds.

  • Impulsarion (IFX Rack) is capped at 30 seconds.

That isn’t the same at all. A frozen reverb doesn’t have the interesting decay characteristics of a good long IR.

This is true, but a very long reverb is also likely to crash an iPad. There are alternatives to crashing the device.

  • I get around 40-45% CPU load when using this monster IR in Drambo, on an iPad 9 from 2021, no Pro, no Air.
    73 seconds!

  • Thanks everyone!
I was thinking it was maybe a bit of a stretch!
I don’t have any of the apps suggested…
    The place sounds amazing!
