Recommendations?: Drum machine/app with high quality, multi-velocity samples for full kits?

Looking to get recommendations on an iOS app (does not need to be auv3) that has:
At least three velocity layers per instrument
Multiple kit types
Dry/minimally processed samples

As far as I can tell this unicorn does not exist on iOS… Does it?

  • Klevgr Oneshot?

I think @GospelMusicians should look into creating and releasing one.

Yea, that’s the closest I’ve found that specifically calls out velocity layers, but $30 is a lot to test it only to be disappointed… especially when i know I can spend not much more and get a vst for the pc…

Oneshot is wildly good. LOTS of kits, good quality, easy editing. The kits in it are good enough and varied enough that at least for the time being I've completely stopped making kits in Drumcomputer.
    Well worth the $ imo.

  • You literally asked for One shot!

But if your requirement were an application on a PC, you wouldn’t be inquiring here.
I don’t think anyone’s been disappointed with OneShot.

One shot as solved all my drum needs.

    You've got two options

    OneShot for $30

Or AudioLayer (maybe decent sampler, not sure) and then find your own freebie sets on whatever site or pay ~$20 per kit on Drumdrops

That's about it (been working on iOS drum emulation for the past year for finger drumming. OneShot was the game changer i'd been searching for)

  • This literally sounds like OneShot.

Special video by @thesoundtestroom you can watch front to back or skim through to get the general idea. If you use an iPhone though, you may be out of luck. (I wish Klevgrand would make OneShot work on iPhones. Literally the best drum app out there atm.)

  • And, not for self promotion, but here's examples via finger drumming I did, utilizing the velocity layers a bit more realistically than sequenced

(Note: Not at all a knock towards Doug's vids in the slightest... Dudes a gorram deity. But since 'velocity layers' was specificlly requested)

The more we help @MonkeyDrummer the better I'd say. Great video so far. :)

You didn't mention how you plan on using this "unicorn", so I'm going to make my perennial recommendation: GarageBand.

It has loads of drum kits, percussion, "Smart Drums", "Beat Sequencer" and all are shockingly easy to use. And best of all, it's completely free on iPadOS.

  • Those are also good suggestions, though DrumPerfect still suffers from not being AUV3, and just being harder to work with overall. Also, both put a lot more of their effort into sequencing features, whereas OneShot is very purely a sample engine, and supplies a really excellent set of preset libraries. All IMO, YMMV, etc, of course.

  • AITA, NAL, FYD, ROFLMAO, TTFN, UNBGBBIIVCHIDCTIICBG, etc

I had to look that last one up to confirm it’s a current meme.
    Yep.

  • Digistix 2.

You can build a fairly complex kit in minutes ( or even sample it ). Also the sequencer matrix is very well implemented and - for me - brought the fun back to drum programming. Much nicer than a conventional piano roll.

I do not own OneShot, so maybe someone can enlighten me: How quickly can you create an extensive drum kit? Is it possible to drag multiple samples into a single slot at once?

  • One Shot and Patterning 3 done.

  • edited December 2024
    1. ONE SHOT
    2. Patterning 3 ( which is a great combo with OneShot because OS doesnt have a sequencer )
    3. Send all your midis to DrumPerfect (if you need more on that set up LMK) or sequence inside DP.
    4. Digistix 2 is MORE than capable - but a bit of a menu diver... well more of a where's that bit again.
  • Wow... So this escalated quickly. :)

Have not seen many questions around here with such a clear answer.. One Shot it is...

Basically as a Unicorn farm. :)

I'm looking to build multi-velocity drum kits in my Roland MC707. That thing is such a powerful beast. Each drum pad in a drum track can have up to 4 samples assigned with velocity triggers, fades, etc. The issues is most multi-sample drum VST's or libraries have like 50 layers or cost a lot. I only need like 3 layers (The MC707's "failing" is the puny sample memory). to get decent sounding results when I play it with my TD drum kit. There's even a comprehensive EQ PER PAD...

So I'm just looking to build a basic AUM setup to trigger 3 velocity hits per drum and then slice into samples for the MC707.

Digistix 2 would be fine for that. It has up to five layers per pad.
OneShot is way more powerful and doesn't have the five layer limit. It also comes with a lot of really good kits

If all you're doing is sampling three layers to the MC707 Digistix is plenty. So is Drambo's sampler.

How many layers per slot are possible in OneShot? Couldn‘t find any info…

I don't know. I haven't heard any talk about limitations. I'm guessing 127 due to there being only that many MIDI numbers available? It would be interesting to make a test.

(Before anyone points out that MIDI actually has 128 possible velocity values, zero doesn't count because that is equivalent to MIDI note off.)

As long as I can get at least 3 layers that blend well that's plenty...

Humm ... you bring up a good point. I don't know how good the cross fading is comparatively in the various apps.

Yeah, seems there‘s no official limit, 127 seems possible.

  • Thanks everyone for the reco… OneShot will do exactly what I need. May try that SynthJacker app with it as well…
