Bird Watch - Live (Jam band in a box)

Fun little jam with a new set up. Essentially it's a jam band in a box one man show. :)

Inspired by @jwmmakerofmusic's November 4 track challenge. I didn't submit there because it's really 5 tracks. Besides the drums, I have a bass track running in GR-16.

I'm using GR-16 IAA so that I can control it with Launchpad Pro. GR-16 is amazing and I can't wait to get my hands on Groove Rider 2!!!. Oh please have it support LaunchPad pro <3

I have Korg nanaKontrol mapped to change presets in Riffler and Chordjam. The output of Riffler and Chordjam are sent through 2 Drambo humanizers then into 2 scaler instances. One for the Riffler riffs and one for Chordjams chords. MIDI mapped scaler sliders allow me to further improvise in key on top of what Riffler and Chordjam are sending out.

I can play around with this stuff for hours!

Audio AUs:

  • Butter Synth
  • OBx
  • Steel guitar
  • Fabfilter Pro C3 (for drums)

Drum machine:

  • GR-16 (IAA)

MIDI AUs:

  • Rozeta scalers
  • Drambo Humanizers
  • The mighty Riffler
  • Chordjam

Hardware:

  • Korg nanoKontrol
  • Launchpad Pro

Thank you Ed! Glad you like it. Much appreciated. <3

  • No idea what you’re doing but the end result is impressive… what was playing the lead line ?

Thank you! I appreciate you taking the time to watch and listen to it. Riffler is playing the lead line which is Steel guitar.

It’s hard to see what’s happening for sure because there’s a lot going on.

    1. The main midi sources are Riffler for lead and Chordjam for sustained and arpeggiated chords.
    2. MIDI from Riffler and Chordjam both are being sent through Drambo humanizer and Rozeta scaler. A pair of humanizer and scaler for melody/riff and another pair of humanizer and scaler for chords coming from Chordjam.
    3. I’m using Groove Rider 16 as my main drum machine. I use it stand-alone with IAA so I can control it with my Launchpad pro with it’s built-in support, muting and unmuting drum and percussion sounds, as well as controlling the GR-16 effects pad. GR-16’s built-in support for Launchpad Pro works very well and is a joy to play with.
    4. I have created a bunch of presets in Riffler and a couple in Chordjam, and have midi mapped the presets to buttons on nanoKontrol.
    5. I have also mapped the scaler sliders to knobs on the nanoKontrol which allows me to use scaler to manipulate the midi coming from Riffler and Chordjam so that I can further improvise in scale on top of what Riffler and Chordjam are sending, simply by twisting the knobs. This is what gives it the jamband vibe.
    6. Additionally, I have mapped buttons and sliders to the AUM mixer. There are a couple of buttons mapped to disable and enable the scalers independently so that I can chose to only have melody, only chords, or both playing all controlled through the nanoKontrol.

This was more of an engineering project for me which I enjoy immensely. iPad apps make this much easier to accomplish vs doing it on a laptop IMHO. It is now a good template for other jams, which can be combined with external hardware synths and drum machines.

Here’s the midi routing on AUM:

  • Many thanks for the (very) detailed response… still impressive stuff !
