ButterSynth Won’t Mixdown In Cubasis 3 iOS

Hi all,
Has anyone had problems performing a mixdown in Cubasis 3 with ButterSynth since the iOS18 update?
ButterSynth plays ok using a keyboard or a midi track as part of a song but it remains completely silent during a mixdown.
I would be interested to find out before I submit a bug report to Arto.
Thanks

  • Did you already try with the Real-time Mixdown and Freeze option enabled?
Some plug-ins still refuse to work properly using when off-line rendering…

    Hi Samu,
Freezing ButterSynth now creates an empty track as does Mixdown, this has only happened since one of the numerous iOS18 updates. I am having the same problem on iPad Air 4 and 13” Air M2.
Synthmaster 2 had preset change problems since iOS18 update, it has just been fixed 👍
Audiobus 3 also suffers from the update.
AddStation has its problems too, it won’t open in Cubasis if that project was created before iOS18 update, Harry Gohs informed me he is working on a fix 👍

Did you really enable the Real-time Freeze and Mixdown option? (I ask this because I just tried it on my 11" M1 iPadPro running iPadOS18.2 and with Real-time Freeze and Mixdown option enabled ButterSynth Renders and Freezes perfectly).

  • Same thing happened with GarageBand during that brief period I owned BS . Also presets would change every time I restarted a song.

What do you call Real Time Freeze? I just tap the freeze symbol on the midi track and it creates an audio track, but with ButterSynth there is no audio at the moment!

  • The same here. No Buttersynth in Cubase when I export audio...

Settings > Mixdown / Freeze > Real-Time Mixdown and Freeze: try turning this on if you haven't already. If you have, try turning it off.

It makes no difference whichever way I try it, BS remains silent on Freeze, Mixdown with Freeze setting turned On and Off, it has to be a Apple issue because SampleTank is another app that won’t do any of the above, you can’t even play it live using a midi keyboard, there are loads of ST users complaining about the iOS18 update causing these problems. I have emailed Arto, I will post any reply from him.

Cubasis was also recently updated. It's possible the problem was introduced there. If anyone has ButterSynth or SampleTank on iOS 17 perhaps they won't mind trying it out on the latest Cubasis release.

I have the same problem in NS2. My workaround is to use 4Pockets Multitrack plugin, record Buttersynth to that, then when I mixdown, the audio from Multitrack is used and works perfectly. It also allows me to remove the Buttersynth instance which helps on the cpu meter and overall project stability.

I use this technique for other plugins that don’t play ball very well on mixdown (for example those that don’t adhere to the correct sample rate on mixdown - I’m looking at you DLYM !)

The problem with SampleTank no longer working in any DAW or played live started directly after the iOS18 update. I also have Music Studio which is now owned by Steinberg, SampleTank works fine there but I can’t import a midi file from Cubasis, if I could I would create my ST audio and export it to Cubasis, IK Multimedia are slow to issue fixes, I don’t want to wait that long!

You're mixing together multiple issues could be unrelated. That isn't going to help get the problem solved faster. Methodically finding ways to narrow down the source of the issues will help. There's a large audience on this forum, so people can try things to help speed up that process if the right questions are asked.

    • You say SampleTank doesn't work in any DAW or if played directly. But then you say it works in Music Studio. Which is it? And what does that have to do with freezing tracks?
    • The problem freezing tracks in ButterSynth probably has nothing to do with SampleTank not loading. There have been lots of problems with ButterSynth even before iOS 18. There have been problems with freezing tracks for certain synths in Cubasis since before iOS 18. Some narrowing down is needed in order to understand who needs to fix what.
    • Music Studio being owned by Steinberg makes little difference. They just bought the program that was already fully developed. Cubasis and Music Studio are completely different code bases. It's a bit like someone who owns two cars taking the working one to their mechanic rather than the broken one just because they were made by the same company.

I'm happy to butt out of the conversation if you'd like.

  • It's probably worth reporting the ButterSynth freeze problem directly to Steinberg.

I’m happy for you to stay in the conversation, I thank you for pointing out my error with me saying ST doesn’t work in all DAWs and then I say it works in Music Studio! Opps, I goofed there🤐
My point in mentioning ButterSynth and SampleTank together is because these audio issues only happened with iOS18 update, I also forgot to mention that Synthmaster 2 preset changing also suddenly became a massive concern for those who use midi prog change messages, I was trying to point out all thus happened before Cubasis recently updated to v3.7. Thankfully KVR331 have fixed their prog change issue, this also excludes Cubasis as being the problem. Another app that has had problems since the iOS18 update is AddStation.
My original question was “is anyone else having mixdown problems with ButterSynth”, I merely mentioned the other app issues to reinforce my suspicions with Apple in the first place, but I will follow your suggestion and post the ButterSynth issue on the Cubasis forum 🍻
Have a great day Wim 👍

  • Thanks for the clarification that the ButterSynth mix down problems existed before the Cubasis update. That's an important detail that should help get to the bottom of the issue sooner.

Steinberg has a direct support contact link in addition to their forum on that page. I've heard they're responsive there.

  • Hi all,

Please report 3rd party app issues to the app vendors. Of course, we're at hand if required to support them.

    Best,
    Lars

I had reply from Arto this morning, he is looking into the recent problem caused by the iOS18 update, I sent him Analytic Data file for this issue, fingers crossed 🤞
