The Wandering Couch Potato

Last May I bit the bullet and bought a 13” iPad Pro with 2TB of storage, and a subscription to Logic. My thinking was that the raw power of this iPad would mitigate some of the buzz kill that had been Logic. I was right about the iPad but I had grossly underestimated the number of ways Logic can wreck your workflow and eat your efforts at making music. This is the 4th composition I started with that setup. Had to throw away the first 3. After 7 months of trying to beat the Logic beast back into its cage, I can now claim some success. Still not a victory but getting there. At some point I may write up some of the more insidious traps I fell in along the way. I have no doubt there are more laying in wait for me. But for now, here’s my first finished product from Logic. Hope you enjoy.

  • Congrats on finishing your first composition in Logic - it's epic! There's some great themes and counter harmonies going on throughout. I'd love to see this live with some real instruments playing - and a real wandering couch potato. Great artwork to boot. Thanks for sharing.

  • What can I say to that. Wonderful in so many ways. If I could make better music, that’s what I would like to make!

Reminded me of all sorts of different composers from Zappa to…..well to some I remember the music but not their names lol :p

Not sure what Logic issues you’re having, but they certainly haven’t stopped you reaching a very high level of excellence!

    Very glad u shared!

  • Nice work! I enjoyed this.

  • I agree with all of the above. Great composition and arrangement. If I recall correctly, you were in the NIU Jazz ensemble, so I would expect nothing less. I too heard a bit of Zappa in there, and maybe some 80s Jean Luc Ponty.

I hope you didn’t actually delete the first three. With 2Tb of storage it would take years to fill. I only have 500Gb and have only used about half. I don’t do video, though. For every track that I post, I probably have 3 or 4 that I gave up on, but they are still there, just in case. I have revisited a few things and have “salvaged” them. I recently posted one called Visitors. I didn’t think it was all that good, but for some reason it’s getting a few plays on SoundCloud. It’s not my favorite genre, but I like when people listen. It’s pretty easy to do, and I could easily learn to like it more.

I have been thinking of going the Logic route, but Cubasis seems to work fine for me and my limited skills. If nothing else, it has never held me back. About a year ago, I decided to stop buying stuff and just play with what I have. My wife likes that.

Anyway, dinner’s ready - Sheperd’s Pie. Love that stuff! Looking forward to more original music from you. Have a great weekend and holiday.

  • @pbelgium thanks much. Id love to hear it live but putting in on would be a challenge. The only remotely practical place would be in a university setting where musicians and venues are free.
@Fruitbat1919 I am humbled by your compliment. Logic issues come down to 2 things: getting comfortable with knowing how to do what I want without stopping to look it up. The idea gets lost in the transfer from right brain to left. The other issues are about the extreme ease with which you can do something really bad by accident and not know you did it.
@Edward_Alexander thanks for listening and happy you enjoyed
@Paulieworld once again you honor me with your praise. I did not physically delete those tracks. Still there for the same reason as you. More like I deleted them from my consciousness because of the stress and frustration from logic associated with them. I rarely give up on something. I just pound away at until it turns into something I like. I did not know my way around logic well enough to pound effectively. I have trouble with CB midi editing. Since everything I do is midi based CB is difficult for me. Logic is better at that but still not as good as NS2 or Xequence. Since starting with logic I stopped buying stuff too and my wife is also happy with that. Hope your dinner was as enjoyable as you expected. And happy holidays to you and yours as well.

  • A very enjoyable track with lots of great moments. Sounds like your couch potato might know a thing to two about playing video games. I really love those sounds.
Others mentioned Zappa. I also hear the playfulness of Elfman, especially his early works where you could hear hints of Oingo Boingo in his orchestration.

  • So many memorable tunes, sounds, rhythms. Beautifully structured , keeps your interest all the way through… superb 🙏

  • @MadeofWax and @GeoTony . Thank you, thank you for listening and kind comments.
