iPad 10 - still a reasonable option to buy?
Would an iPad 10 still be a solid basis for a groovebox (mostly samples and 3 synth tracks at the most) type setup?

Got one for Christmas from my wife. Pushed it pretty hard last night and it performed pretty well.
Even an iPad 6 would be more than enough in your case.
The iPad 11 is likely to be a pretty big jump in specs due to Apple Intelligence requirements. At the very least, the 10th gen will get even cheaper.
But yes, your requirements seem pretty reasonable for even an older model.
Your problem won’t be cpu, it will be storage and connectivity. Is it lightning? I personally would go usb-c but I got an ipad9 an year or so ago (it has the mini jack) and it has to last 2 more years before I consider upgrading
I have pro 11 m1 for music and 10 for general use.
I sometimes load projects that are 50% cpu on the m1 onto the iPad 10 and the percentage jumps to 75% but I can still run them glitch free.
I’d say you can easily run what you’ve described unless you use cpu heavy apps.
Try looking at Apple’s refurbished iPads. Less money, new batteries and can also be insured against high repair costs with AppleCare+.

I'd say that for your purposes, it's a "yes" from me. However, keep in mind that 64gb is not enough storage, so definitely shoot for the 256gb model. Best of luck with your continued music making.
My 9th gen is plenty for those purposes, so you should be fine. But as @jwmmakerofmusic says, try not to scrimp on the storage.
Cheers mate. Yeah, I'd wager a 9th gen would be perfectly fine as well so long as it has the storage necessary. Man, I remember back ten years ago when my iPad Air 2 with 128gb was enough storage, but this was before Module Pro got even more IAPs as well as before Beathawk and Pure Synth Platinum 2. 😂
I got slapped silly in an earlier thread where I said 64gb storage was too little for musicians. I'm not gonna do that again. 😂
Oh dear, lol. Well, I will say that 64gb is sufficient storage for more synth-based musicians who don't really use samples/romplers and also use cloud storage/external storage. But my 512gb Mini 7 is already at half capacity, lol. 😂 So my needs are definitely different than what other musicians may need.
Bought an iPad 10 a few months back and it handles everything i throw at it as far as music apps go.
Prefer my iPad 9 for the headphone socket, should be plenty powerful for that use case. Have found 64gb storage more of a problem than cpu.
That was one thing I was hesitant on when going from my 7th gen to the 10th gen. I definitely miss the headphone port but the addition of USB C has made it tolerable. I use a headphone/charging dongle and it’s not so bad. I went with the 256GB and definitely wouldnt suggest going lower than 128 if you’re doing music.
Thanks for all of your valuable insights!
A friend of mine got an 256gb iPad 10th gen for Christmas and I got to play around with it a little visiting on Christmas day. Seemed like a snappy iPad to me. I’d say yes 10th gen is a reasonable option today for music making. At first I couldn’t navigate on it because I couldn’t find a home button like my 9th gen has, lol. And personally I’d really miss not having a headphone jack, but if I got a free one as a present too I’d be happy anyway.

I still have 5th Gen iPad and it still chugs along. Lol. Old but I'm grateful for it.
