Really?
Ooooooo …
Very curious, very weary I won't be able to satiate it because it's unreadable
The microfontsgalore continues
If I can’t see it I can’t play it
Oh well
Woahhhhhh
Looks like DC days are numbered !
I love playbeat 3
Can’t wait for this
Gotta see this
As I predicts - this will rule 2025 drum machines - mark it
GREAT VIDEO Doug
This looks really good for creating new ideas.
Well, I'mma just say it..
Why do yall fail so hard with the gui's? Geez Louise that rainbow shit is dated.
They use Juce I think
Playbeat 4 could’ve used at least a refresh if not a new GUI , I’ll agree with that
😂 At least it's not skeuomorphism. Idk. I'm learning Drambo, and I like that UI better.
Drambo UI is kind of awesome
No MiDi import, Probability?
It is. Like @ejacul337 , I too don't care much for the rainbow UI. 😂 It's too garish and loud on my eyes. I much prefer the Drambo UI which looks lovely when producing at night. NS2's UI as well, as well as Cubasis' grey UI. I do produce during the day, but most of my better ideas come at night.
Mine come while I’m in the shower 🚿
….and yeah, Drambo ftw!
I’m with you. I don’t even have to watch the video. I can tell just by the cover.
Faktz
This too! Especially when I'm humming.
Yes! I haven't even scratched the surface on the modular aspects, just getting to grips with Drambo as a groovebox and AU host.
I'd like to know whether version 4 works as a Midi AU effect I.e. just as a drum sequencer. Previous versions didn't...
You can use Playbeat 3 as a drum sequencer
More of a sampler player, but I dig.
Octochodron(sp) works beautifully with one shot.
Oc-to-chron lol
Thanks. I did try sending the output from one track to another in Cubasis and while that works, being able to use it as a Midi AU effect would be infinitely preferable. I'm using Octochron (PolyBeat is still broken in Cubasis) but would like to be able to utilise Playbeat's generative capabilities.
I see a few differences of note: (1) AI pattern generator based on genre/style (2) Pitch modifications can follow scales (similar to Loopmix) (3) Sample editor is more advanced and includes some effects.
Impressions on the GUI in the preview:
I have to say I'm not real keen on the GUI changes drum sequencer page. I much prefer the aesthetic of Playbeat 3 which was consistent and more minimalist. It would show the cursor for each lane with a moving white dot and locked steps would show with a dot inside the dot. The overall impression of what was happening in what lane and the flow of each line seems much more clear and easy to track for me in Playbeat 3. With this layout, I feel like there's too much going on, and it doesn't feel easy on the eyes. The icons for the instruments is a nice idea, but again, I feel that the icons are rather lacking in character, and very Garageband-like, which is just OK.
Wish list for the new version:
*Step graphics: Dots for steps (or something other than big square blocks) would be preferable with the velocity of the steps at least partially indicated by the size of the dots, and I would welcome any other information that could be represented like the pitch/repeat values, since it's often hard to keep track of that across multiple panes (for me).
*Track numbers. It would be nice to see those at least with a button that could turn them on or off.
*Instrument icons: The icons do their job, but they look super basic, which is fine, but it would be nice if they were more easy to see, with a bit more contrast. Having the icons in different colors that appear to follow the track color instead of the type of sound seems a bit confusing. E.g. Kick should have one color, cymbals should have a different one, unless that's how they already work. Is the kick always red? I can't tell from the demo.
*Font size and layout: There's an awful lot of empty real estate at the top of the screen where the giant randomize button is located. That section could be shrunk down or buttons to control what appears in the main sequencer screen could be added. As others have stated, the fonts are quite small, so if they could be enlarged or if there was even a zoom option (which I've seen used elsewhere) that would be a big help. The fonts also appear to be a slightly grayish white, so a bit more brightness on the font color might help, or even changing the font type to be bolder and thicker. Even if the background which is sort of a dark purple/gray could be darkened a bit that might help.
*AI Generated beats: I hope that the AI selects the instruments as well as the patterns. Also, I imagine the AI will need to use factory supplied, or 3rd party presets which have information about the instrument character so that it can generate patterns that make sense. If it could generate patterns from a user custom kit, which had the percussion types categorized (cymbal, kick, snare, etc.) that would be great.
*Swing controls: I'm going to use Lumbeat Hip-Hop drummer as an example here. It has options to control the swing (it's called Flex Swing in the app) individually on kick, hats, snare and all on both the 8th and 16th. I know Playbeat 3 has a shuffle control, and it can be adjusted per track or globally, but that's pretty limited. If there was some sort of control beyond the shuffle to shift the step start time, like a random offset or some presets that could control the offset, that would be very nice.
I hesitate to express wishes or criticism of the Playbeat 4, because I know that it's been under development for quite a while and is undergoing extensive testing, and the last thing I want to do is contribute to any delay in its release, although I don't really believe my commenting in the LP forum could do that. I would also like to add that whenever a developer says that an app will be released in 1 month, one week or one day, I usually do a mental trick and multiply it by three. So when I hear the release date is January 2025, and it's December 2024, I'm going to set my expectations on 1st quarter 2025, and if it shows up sooner, great. I believe in the policy of underpromise and overdeliver. I've seen how people react when that doesn't happen!
**Edit: I must add that I am a huge fan of Playbeat 3, and I think it's incredible and I use it a lot. The massive collection of free sound packs, the MIDI control and export/import features, the smart randomization, the drag and drop functionality, the beautiful look and feel of the app, and so much more, and the fact that it feels like a fully functional desktop app on iPad is amazing. I think most people only use about 10% of the powerful features, so it's underrated.
... thought we might have heard something by now about this? I remember hearing by end of month in Doug's video. Anybody heard any news?
