Combining Pianoteq + Salamander pianos for classic jazz playing

On the hunt for a better old jazz piano sound. Combined my favorite pianoteq jazz piano with the best sounding sampled piano that blended well with it. This particular combination seems to have the best of both worlds, the solid pianoteq sound with the unique characteristics of a sampled sound. Made this small improv song to share here to see if this sounds ok to other ears also.

This is the Pianoteq Bosendorfer VC Jazz piano + Salamander Grand 16 velocity soundfont found on the freepats soundfont site. Had to tweak the tuning on salamander and the panning a little on pianoteq to marry them together so it sounded like one piano. The salamander is a little off in the top register, but this piano combination sounds much better and more realistic to me than the single pianos do by themself. What do you think?

This is a little improv to the ‘Frim fram sauce’ song.

  • This sounds great. I really enjoy your playing. Makes me wish I had a real piano again. The blend of the two sounds is seamless. However, this would sound just as good on an old, beat up honky tonk in a biker saloon.

  • Thanks, @Paulieworld. I found that this particular combination only worked well for styles like this, more dynamic playing didn’t work so well. So, I started over and got a better combination which iis much more versatile

I replaced the SF2 version of the salamander with the SFZ one which came with retuned samples, it sounds better. I backed off the salamander volume so that it doesn’t overpower and stick out on louder playing but still adds that life and sparkle to the upper notes that pianoteq is missing. This is closer to what I am after for solo piano sound. Here’s a small test, sounds closer to a real piano to me.
