JWM - MMXXV (Longform Ambient Produced in Cubasis 3)

Honestly, my aim was to make Ambient that lasted 30-40 minutes, but at least I made it a little beyond the 20 minute mark. 😂 Damn it, lol. My other plan was to produce this starting at 11pm yesterday and not stop until I was finished. But then I collapsed from exhaustion despite not partying or drinking yesterday, lol. However, at least I did one thing I set out to do...work on a piece of Ambient into 2025. 😂

The idea behind the first part was to have a huge orchestral build-up lasting roughly 10 minutes, which represents the anticipation of the coming new year. I used Iconica Sketch for all the orchestral elements. Most of the elements were programmed in, but I used Ioniarics (one of the MIDI sequencers I really love) for tha Marimba. The sound of people were two field recordings I got from freesound.org.

The second part was to use synths to represent the deep sleep after the NYE party and, eventually waking up to the sounds of birds (also a field recording obtained from freesound.org). The main synth lead is BA-1, and I improvised the notes on my SMK-25. The horns from the first section make a return later on in this section, but driven by a riff I also improvised on my SMK-25. Then there are a couple pieces of ear candy. The bells are from that FM pack Steinberg were so kind to provide. The second one is Gadget's Phoenix as an AU plugin.

I froze each section to audio after creating it in order to manipulate and edit the audio further (mostly using the volume faders to fade sections in and out). 😂 I find committing things to audio to be a lot more fun. It isn't necessarily a means of freeing up the processor (although that's definitely an advantage to this workflow) but rather a preferred workflow that harkens back to my OP-1 Field days. However, Cubasis uses non destructive audio editing, which is great in case I f-ck something up. 😂

I mastered this piece using Doctor Vibe, Grand Finale 2, a limiter set to -1dB, and Youlean's Loudness Meter. Cheers, enjoy, and Happy New Year.

(By the way, you needn't listen to the whole thing in one sitting. You can listen to a part and come back later. Or you can simply skim through the piece to get the gist of it. Or you can play the whole thing in the background while working on income taxes, lol. However you choose to listen is up to you.)

  • Your choice for ambient is the right one.....it sounds really good!

Mate, that just made my day. Thank you so kindly. :)

  • I don't typically associate something this musical to the ambient genre, but I suppose that shows my lack of knowledgeof it.

I was expecting something far more atonal. I was very pleasantly surprised.

At first the thought of listening to a 20 minute track was daunting as well but it was absolutely entertaining throughout and I was a bit surprised at how quickly it was over.

A really well produced piece that is perfect for the holiday season.

I simply used the term "Ambient" loosely, at least for the first half, lol. The second half is more what one would associate with Ambient (more synth-driven and such).

Oh man, I produced my atonal stuff in Summer 2022, and I can barely listen to most of it. 😂 Let's just say I relied on PaulXStretch a bit too much.

That's one amazing compliment. :) I do like to make things entertaining rather than boring/monotonous (although I do feel the piece was monotonous here and there, lol).

Thank you so kindly, my friend. ☺️

  • A track of two halves but both well worth listening to… nice work Jim 👍
BTW what are you using for your track art at the moment, looks good !

Thank you so kindly. I use an app called Wonder AI. Got the lifetime version when it was first released.

I know that "AI is evil" or some sh-t, but honestly I can't be bothered to handmake a piece of digital art per track as I release quite often. (Although for my track "Snake", I made that album art as I was targeting someone specifically. The person was this person I knew from a gaming community who turned on me for no good reason.)
