CC or Note On/Off — either preferred for controllers and Loopy Pro?

Is one better than the other—CC or Notes—for controllers sending press/release/double tap/long press to LP? Any advantages one way or the other?

And confirming: Note 0 to 64 has the same effect as CC 0 to 127.

Perhaps a stupid little question, but I’m building my setup for controlling LP now and I want it to be as solid as possible. All my controllers are configurable.

Thanks,

Steve

  • If the controller is not a keyboard and not meant to be used to enter notes I always use CC messages. I use my MIDI controllers for different applications (Loopy Pro, plug-ins etc.), and not just for a single purpose. I am aware that some synths / plug-ins do not allow note messages to be used for anything but notes, and I do want to avoid the pain of reconfiguring MIDI controllers again and again... So CC is the way to go for me.

MIDI Messenger is a free Swiss Army knife AU for converting MIDI events. For apps using MIDI note keyswitches like Iconica Sketch, you can use CCs to trigger the keyswitches.

Note or CC work equally well. Off is 0.Loopy Pro treats any non-0 value as On.

I prefer to use CCs. But I will say that I’ve had a very, very few cases where midi learn went smoother with notes in Loopy Pro. Still, I stick with CCs. Conceptually it’s just a more appropriate usage.

Ultimately, it makes no material difference though.

This makes sense and supports a policy of using CCs whenever possible for controls.

This is a reassuring tidbit. Thanks.
