What music theory app is most practical and helpful to you musically?
Things like circle of fifths, chord progression type basic theory.
Comments
Mapping tonal harmony is a beast, but perhaps overkill. If you just want a circle of fifths then a picture will do just fine.
Tonality is also very nice
Overkill is good! Thank you!
When I say overkill I mean it, I’ve been studying harmony for decades and it still baffles me at times (maybe because it’s more classical oriented and I’m no master)
To be honest you have to know just how much and in which context you want to learn harmony, cause it’s one thing if you want to play classical, or rock, or blues…
Or pop (that you just need triads)
It all circles around the same notes, though 😂
So many great ones. I’m using this one called Wilsonic on iPad.
Interesting. Thanks for the info! I plan on exploring chord progressions and eventually turning them into counterpoint. (4th a 5th a minor fall, a major lift kind of thing)
Thanks! checking on it.
Oh cool, I hadn’t seen this one. Good catch!

Yeah Tonality is a good one also, as @pedro suggested.
Wow, so many!
Back in the days I did a lot of excel charts. Both for piano and guitar. And then when I became lazier just for ukulele 🤷♂️
I can dig those back if you find it any useful
For instance the CAGED system for guitar, or all modes of the major and 3 minor canonical scales for piano
Some of those I’m sure I posted here before, but no idea where
Another one that is pretty heavy duty (but fascinating) is Harmonius:

If you're interested in music training apps (intervals, ear training, etc.), I've got several recommendations for those including drums.
Tonality does it for me...

This is a fun little one 😊
All hail Eris
Hey Ed, yes would love to hear your recommendations for ear training apps, apps to develop improv skills etc, cheers
Personally, because of the way I learn it is not an app. I use apps for reference or reminders but ultimately my understanding of theory has come from years of reading, videos and exposure to musicians.
How does this translate into chord relationships? Looks really interesting. I'll get the app and check it out.
Tonality has to be at the top of the list.
for me – none.
the problem with music theory apps is that all of them are about diatonic, but both of my favorite scales are not.
What are your favorite scales?
Check out a solid chord tool called ChordMaps2. Check out their website as well to understand how it all fits. Very comprehensive, and more importantly useful for people that are not music theory phd’s.

Thnx for sharing 🥰
Phrygian Dominant & Dorian #4 (a.k.a. Ukrainian Dorian, a.k.a. Romanian Minor)
these scales are diatonic by the way.
That is a kind offer. I'm feeling a little saturated by all the input so I'll wait on that for now, but thanks!!
That’s what I was thinking but refrained from saying until I was sure. Harmonic or melodic?
