howto use a countdown: is my method ok or..

Hi,
I am using loopy pro to record songs: one track for every loop. I usually use loops of 32 or 64 bars.
To start recording I am looking for a way to start exactly on time. Some other recorders like garageband I think have a countdown function but I havent found one in loopy pro yet (there is something under settings but no idea howto use that)
So I came up with a way to do it, but perhaps there is an easier way, please do give feedback.

What I do now is:
make a 2 bar loop and set intro in general settings to custom 2 bars
record with intro and then say 1-2-3-4 2-2-3-4
Then I can start recording with playing loop 1 with the intro every time.
Now if I want to record 32 bars I set loop 1 to 32 bars, and its completely empty except for the intro countdown.
Then when I want to record the first guitar part I do that on loop 2 and let it start to record.

I do need to find a way to swiftly let Both tracks stop and rewind to the beginning. Anybody know howto do that?

greetings and rock on

  • @hanscees : are you aware of the “perform count- in” option? When it is on, there is a one bar count-in when you press the play button.

Turn on wait for playback in the clip settings dialog. Then you can tap a clip to arm it, press the transport play button and get a measure of count-in

you could also record in the sequencer. When you arm a clip there for recording , there are a few count-in options

Turn off phase-lock. See this video :

  • Double-tap immediately stops loops regardless of quantization settings.

Fwiw, It doesn’t have to be a double-tap. Tap then another tap will do it. Any tap during a count-in or count-out ends it immediately.

found it, under global clip settings

  • ok, I now am this far: see mindmap.
How do I make loop 1 start when I start to record loop 2?

Yes. The setting I was referring to is in the global Clip Settings panel.

Unless you have changed Loopy's settings, starting recording of one clip will stop any current recording and start recording the next loop. The loop that was recording will automatically play back if you haven't changed the settings.

Or is there something else you have in mind?

I am afraid it doesnt in the flow in the mindmap. The first loop does not start to play when I start the clock with the > button.
I want to start the already recorded loop 1 to play when I start the clock, and loop 2 to start recording. But loop 1 does nothing

It sounds like you have changed some settings. So we need to see your settings and what is happening.

Can you post a screen recording (post to YouTube and post a link ) of what you are doing and a screenshot of your the settings in the clip settings panel and any clips whose settings have changed?

By default. after a loop records it plays. If that is not happening, you have changed a setting that results in the clip turning off.

Loop 1 does play after I record, that is not the problem. But after that I stop loop one by clicking on it. At that moment nothing runs and loopy pro clock is pauzed and shows the |> ▶️sign and not the || ⏸️ sign.
Then I arm loop 2. Then I start the play button of the clock and loop 2 starts recording but loop 1 does not start to play.

I Will make a movie and post it, but might take some time cause no idea howto to that.
    Thanks for all the help!

May I ask why you turn Loop 1 off, if you want it to be on when you start the transport again?

There are ways to turn it on when you start recording loop 2, but it seems like for the use-case you describe, the simplest solution is to stop the transport rather than stop the loop.

If you let me know more , I’ll suggest a few ways doing what you want.

It also sounds like you have Pause Clock on Idle turned on and might want to turn it off.

  • ok video is here

  • @hanscees : the simplest solution is to turn off Pause Clock On Idle, tap on loop 1 to put it in play mode, tap on Loop 2 to arm
    it and start the transport.

I am unclear as to why you turn off the loop if you want it to be on when the transport starts again.

There are other ways to accomplish this, but I think my suggestion for a simplest.

Two reasons. If you dont turn of loop one, there is no countdown again when you start recording loop 2
Other reason is if I stop the clock, all loops show go back to the beginning. I often make mistakes when recording and if your music is 64 bars you dont want to wait for half a minute or longer to start again with a new trial to record it perfectly. I often try upto 10-20 times before a recording is good enough.

that works exactly one times correctly. After that the countdown doesnt work anymore.

Stopping the transport will do what you want. If you stop the transport, it stops the clip from playing and pressing play again will give you the count-in if you turned in perform counts-in. Normally, it also resets the clip playheads. It sounds like this is turned off.

If starting the transport is not starting the clip from the beginning, long-press the transport button and set the transport to reset playhead on stop.

  • @hanscees

if this doesn't solve your issue, let me know what difference in behavior you want.

  • @hanscees : btw, in you case you didn’t know, there is a very DAW-like workflow available via the sequencer. Here is an ultra-quick DEMO

    this seems to work👍👍👍👍

I Will record some music and if A problem arises let you know. I am very happy with this!

    will try that too😀

  • @hanscees : btw, in the sequencer, it might not be obvious, but you can drag a clip to be any length. The numeric field may have a limit of 32 but you can drag a clip to be longer than that.
