USB connectivity question with IOS
Noob question
I've got a Digitone 2 which I'm currently playing with chordpolypad on iPad via Digitone's USB (each pad triggering a different instance of the digitone). The thing is I also need the USB port of the Digitone to connect to my laptop/Ableton.
I could plug the iPad to the laptop and send the MIDI back to the Digitone, but I'd prefer iPad connected straight into the Digitone (extra step to connect with Audio MIDI Setup and IDAM every time it's disconnected + running through Live could add latency, bugs)
I could also send MIDI to the laptop with the MIDI din connection, instead of USB and use Digitone's USB only for the iPad, but then I'd lose audio over USB for the Digitone
Can I just plug a USB hub to the Digitone so it receives both laptop and iPad?
I'd like to find a solution that involves as little cables/power supply/device as possible

You cannot connect two USB host devices at once. I would go the other way around and use the Digitone's USB for the computer, and connect the iPad MIDI to the Digitone's DIN inputs. This could be done either via a USB / MIDI interface cable or something like a CME WIDI Jack that allows the iPad to connect to DIN MIDI via Bluetooth.
No. A USB hub has one host port (dangly wire usually) to connect to a computer, and multiple slave ports for slave devices. Your Digitone is a slave; laptop and iPad are hosts.
If you only need USB audio for the laptop, you could connect the Digitone USB to the laptop, and use a USB MIDI adapter like this one to connect the 5-pin MIDI to the iPad. Note that the 5-pin MIDI input to Digitone may not be repeated on the USB (MIDI thru), if you need that.
OMG thank you, I was taking the problem backward, and I even have one of these adapters. Just tested and it works.
I didn't get the part about MIDI thru but I may not need that. I want MIDI to still go in and out to/from Live vua USB as well, but I think it'll work, thanks a lot, super helpful
Thank you so much, that's super helpful, I was thinking backward. Don't know why I assumed iPad had to communicate only via USB. It works now with a simple usb to MIDI cable. Thanks a ton. )))
What I meant by "MIDI thru": you need to check whether the Digitone sends the data from its MIDI In port out on the USB port. It might not do that.
I see thanks!!
