Finished Red Sails In the Sunset improv (PurePiano, Sunrizer, Beathawk, SessionBand)
A couple years ago I posted just a piano improv of playing the classic song ‘Red Sails in the Sunset’. Today I took that recording and layered a bunch of tracks over it, and added some drums, to finally complete the song. Tried to make it sound different, not standard jazz.
Piano: PurePiano
Bass & Vibraphone: Beathawk
Drums: SessionBand jazz 3
Synths: Sunrizer synth- @Spidericemidas presets.
I used AUM/MidiTapeRecorder for most of it, had to go into MulitTrackStudio to edit the drum track beats to fit my piano playing, I didn’t improv all that steady.

I was about to go to bed when I saw this. I had to listen. I first heard this song when I was about eight years old. I was one of Mrs. Jacklin’s “Junior Accordionaires”. She had another accordion student named Alice. She was 10… an older woman. She played this for her recital piece. I was infatuated.
It’s a great old tune. My dad said first time he heard this was when he joined the navy, when the ship was pulling out of port first time, some sailers where singing this song. He was drafted in the Korean War - at the end of it so he never saw any action.
I love the extra touches you added to make it sound more atmospheric and moody. Part of understanding jazz harmony is knowing what additional notes or chord substitutions will work to personalise a tune you may have heard but got tired of. These extras create a new sense of discovery for the listener.
Thanks @McD. I was wondering if making it sound more exotic like this would make it suitable for a tiki/exotica genre album. I notice that this song is on many island type albums. Will probably just do all originals for a tiki album though.
Thanks for listening!
I think an album of originals is better for the artist but anyone focused on sales will say the covers “sell” more easily. Honestly, I suspect hoping for big sales numbers is a dream few will realize.
I do think that surveying famous tunes for harmonic ideas is a good idea to create something familiar but totally defensible as new.
I like seeing you layer more parts and getting into the art of arranging a tune beyond the piano trio format.
You should try playing parts in real-time (to the click) in Staffpad to make something complicated.
I’ve had a couple projects workout that way using a midi controller and totally avoiding any pencil input. If an input part has issues then using the pencil for touch ups is an option. But I suspect with your keyboard skills the pencil may not be needed at all expect on tweaking levels.
Keep imagining an album and forge ahead with whatever tools produce for you. Your years of keyboard mastery will make the effort painless.
It’s a great tune and this does it justice… great feel and the new sounds work really well 🙏
