Keyboard shortcuts in Loopy Pro?

Firstly, it is quite unfortunate that Loopy Pro and Logic Pro both are being shortened to "LP" in this forum, hehe. Then again as I'm using both I often find something that is relevant anyways, often questions I didn't know I had until I read them, so that is good I guess, at least when the questions have answers too, which is most often the case.

To my actual question:

I bought one of those little thingy-controllers called 8BitDo (I think because I saw a post about it in here, leading to a YT video, but I cannot find that post right now). It is basically a little joystick for Nintendo Switch BUT it can also act as a (computing) keyboard, with 16 keys, on an iOS/iPadOS device.

As they are really teeny weeny I can velcro it to the back of my guitar. Really nice! I have quick access to 16 commands on my iPad without having to move to the screen and start fiddling about, something that can be tricky whilst you're playing guitar. So far so good.

The main intended use was to be able to bind the keys of the 8BitDo to functions in Loopy Pro, and get access to the retrospective recording etc...but this is where it starts to fall apart. I am guessing, but someone is welcome to confirm, that there are all kinds of bindings possible in Loopy Pro when it comes to gestures etc, but it does not have keyboard shortcuts. Correct?

Going back to my intro of this post, I now have learnt how I can control Logic Pro (searching for "keyboard shortcuts in LP" teaches me there has been a couple of discussions and videos about that for Logic Pro) and also Koala from the 8BitDo, so all is not totally lost (from a purchase kind of view), but it would be great if there were keyboard shortcuts in Loopy Pro as well. But there are none, correct?

Loopy Pro can have bindings to typing keyboards. Midi Learn also recognizes keystrokes from typing keyboards.

You can indeed map key strokes to any action you like in Loopy Pro. Just use the MIDI Learn function. Or set it up using the Control Settings > Add New Bindings.

  • Sweet jebus, thanks @espiegel123 and @wim . Obviously the one thing I didn't test. I was looking for the controller in the midi settings etc, where it couldn't be seen as either a controller, keyboard or midi device, and then looked at manual which doesn't have a keymap in that sense (as it clearly isn't needed). Looks like genius Michael has made it as simple as it should be and I was too silly to try that simplicity. Thanks! :D

  • The button label is still "Midi Learn", which is a bit misleading. The device shows up as "Musical Typing" when you try to add it as a MIDI input, which makes sense if you actually have a typing keyboard, but maybe not so much with a special device. It shows up as "Keyboard" in the Control > Binding dialogs.

So yeh, not super discoverable. 😉

  • I’ll update the docs and wiki to improve discoverability.

  • Ok, so I'm now doing...something, with my controller. Is there a way to clear midi-bindings, or to see a list of them? When I now try a few things it says "Oh, that button also controls 3 other things" but I have no idea which ones, or how to delete them...I'm guessing there is a really dead-easy way to do that too that I'm just missing... :D

  • Found it. Control settings and then going in on them. Thanks. :)

Midi Bindings are listed in the profiles listed in Control Settings.
