JWM - Desolate Planet (Drone Ambient in Cubasis)

So I figured I'd break this out from the "Jamuary" journal and give it its own thread given how much I'm proud of this piece. The piece is rather quite simple, but sounds very complex.

The bass is simply Cubasis' Micrologue, with two oscillators (the second being pitched down an octave) and some effects applied to it. The secret for this sound evolving is subtly automating the tuning of one of the oscillators to detune it, bring it back "in tune", and detune it the opposite direction over the duration of the piece.

The middle pad is Bleass Megalit. Megalit has four LFOs which can go down to very slow speeds. So why shouldn't I take advantage of those, including wavetable position and other various morphing of the sound.

The upper pad is my favourite. I used Waldorf Microwave for that, hooked LFO 1 up to the wavetable position of oscillator 1, and used three phasers at varying speeds (Cubasis' phaser, FAC Phazer, and RealPhase in that order) to give it some excellent timbre evolution.

I placed two reverb sends - one Stratosphere Cloud Reverb, and the other being FAC Alteza. I applied Stratosphere mostly to the bass, somewhat to the Megalit pad, and a lot to the Microwave pad. I applied Alteza heavily to the Megalit pad and a little bit to the Microwave pad.

Mastered with the usual Doctor Vibe, Grand Finale 2, Cubasis' brickwall limiter set to -1dB, and Youlean's Loudness Meter.

Please enjoy. :)

I second that. First time I listened on my phone, but second time I put my AirPods in and you really hear the subtleties that way.

Agreed. ☺️ Headphones represent the stereo field much better.

Yep. I missed so much of it the first while getting food ready in the kitchen and just letting it play. AirPods was while sitting down and just focused on listening.

That's what's amazing about Ambient, really. You can have it on in the background while doing things and it'll help ease the mood (or darken it, depending on which sort of Ambient it is). But when you dig in and actively listen, the best kinds of Ambient tracks have subtle changes and details. :)
