What are the best "real" ipad music apps for a young (barely reading) kid of 6?

  • Great! Glad to hear it, @gmslayton. I love the idea of a parent and child playing a musical instrument at the same time :)

  • Me and my little brother play fiddle wax,I play keys he does drums, he loves it and so do I i have it midied up to other apps like the arturias and stuff like that really great app

  • How about Rockmate for jamming together with them?

  • If it wasn't already mentioned, Cotracks is really fun to play with others, and should be good for most any level.

  • +1 to both Rockmate and Cotracks.

  • You could check out 'Toca Band' http://tocaboca.com/game/toca-band/

It's made for kids and I guess not a 'real music app' but is pretty fun and actually introduces a lot of concepts IMO.

It's a really high quality app.

  • Also try Fingertip Maestro.

  • Shapes Music by Shapes Music, LLC

This is a good one. Will allow her to play along with YouTube videos.

From the screenshots, it looks like there's obnoxious background photos of celebrity pop stars on each page. Can you get rid of that?

  • You choose video, and there is a setting you can uncheck to allow explicit content. Not sure how well that works though.

  • 2y Leo and Take
he even recorder some stuff, alone

  • That is too cute. Little baby music nerd!

  • My little guys love ThumbJam and DrumJam. They're 6 and 8.

  • Couple of new ones...

Recording vocals through VoiceJam (excellent because so many effects), Improvox or similar (Wretch Up?). Maybe to a beat going in Figure or something.

Plug into speakers and make sure your mic isn't pointing at the speakers.

    Great fun.

  • "A-Delay" As an echo effect kids love it. That's if a sampler is just too much to learn.

  • I've tried a lot of music apps with the four year old, and the hands down favorite for us is a hidden gem called Color Chime. No AB, MIDI or even a recording method, but it's great for spontaneous creation. You pick a shape and a size then tap on the screen— the notes are random but quantized and in a key and scale. The shapes animate and loop as you overlay the different tones, and the results are quick and surprisingly professional sounding. You can change key, scale, tempo, filter and delay in the settings, on the fly, and create a little performance.

Second place would be SoundieThingy. Again, no AB, but it's just so much fun. You draw on the screen and little oscillator powered creatures move along the line, changing their tone based on the x/y and speed of the stroke, then you can draw little branches off to make simple arpeggios.

I've got a 6 year old boy - he loves playing with my iPad synths but he's a bit heavy handed, I worry he's going to break it when he's tapping out a rhythm!

I've bought him a 3/4 sized acoustic for Xmas, and will get him a Casio keyboard - they'll be a bit more robust! Then when I upgrade next year the iPad and synths are all his!

  • Another vote for Musyc.
