How to record midi output of AU instrument on Logic?

I'm thought I'd done this before but can't remember...

I get that long pressing on a MIDI FX will give me a "Record MIDI to Track Here" option but what about recording the midi output of an Instrument?

Something like Pure Acid with its own sequencer, how do I record it's midi output. I don't want to bother exporting the midi I just want to capture it. I thought previously I'd just hit record and it's notes would write into the track as long as the app supports midi out?

  • You should be able to use the 'Internal Midi' option in the Inspector and select any track/plug-in that hosts a midi-out capable plug-in as the source and then record the output.

  • As ever Sam, huge thanks for your help <3

Small rant: so illogical to my brain! Record midi output of MIDI FX and Instrument are in a completely different place to each other even though they're basically doing the same thing.

Record midi output of MIDI FX and Instrument are in a completely different place to each other even though they're basically doing the same thing.

Not exactly, when you record the output from a Midi FX on a track the track already has midi coming in from a 'controller' or the sequencer, what is super illogical is that there is no easy way to 'print' the Midi FX to an existing midi-region using say for example 'bounce in place' which would in practice just replace the midi-region with the source region being processed thru the Midi FX but instead is has to be recorded to another track using the tracks output as the input for another track...

What the 'Internal Midi' thing does is routing midi-data from one track to another so it's 'Logical' it's in another place :sunglasses:

  • I bow to your greater understanding of this stuff :)

Talking of bounce in place, why the hell is Join hidden away with Bounce on its own menu but Split (✂️) is up by Loop and Stretch on the tool bar?

    Tap on any region and...

  • Yes I know they're both next to each other on this menu, it just didn't help coming from Cubasis where they're both together, always in view, on the tool bar. A minor gripe I suppose but my brain just doesn't cope too well with this kind of thing :|

Cubasis doesn't even have proper 'bounce in place' function last time I checked and I have to use the freeze function :D
There is a 'glue' tool to join two midi or audio-events into one new event which can be handy at times.

I can cope with most apps and I still wish we'd have a powerhouse like Reaper on the iPad for real DAW duties...
