AUM help: Prevent IAA instrument from being played with connected keyboard all the time?

Hi. I love using AUM to make songs. One app I use for bass is SampleTank. It’s IAA only. I play it with my connected Korg midi keyboard and record midi track into MidiTapeRecorder. The problem I’m having is once the SampleTank app is loaded, it plays every time I play a note on the keyboard and I can’t turn that off when I record other channels/tracks. I don’t see any setting in AUM or SampleTank to temporarily turn keyboard input off for SampleTank. Is there a way to do that? Thanks for any help!

I am surprised you can even get a sound out of ST, ever since I updated both of my iPads to OS18, ST no longer responds to external midi, it also no longer works in Cubasis 3, there is now no internal link.
I have many Cubasis projects that use ST in IAA mode but now don’t work at all, ST has some really fantastic instruments, far better than the majority of AUv3 synth apps and because of this I can’t substitute ST with anything else.
I am currently in contact with IK Multimedia with this issue (since 27/12/2024), the support team are investigating the problem and as soon as I get positive news from them I will post it on this forum.
I know this is not the answer you require but I thought I would keep you informed of the iOS18 update issues, there are numerous other apps that also no longer work since the update was released.

  • Well thanks very much for that warning, @rapidfire . I’m still on iOS 16. I sometimes get close to deciding to update, but all my apps work fine and I just don’t want to risk having a situation like you are experiencing. Yes I agree, SampleTank has some marvelous sounds. Thanks for telling me about the issue.

If I recall correctly, SampleTank always listens directly to attached MIDI controllers. If my memory is correct, you need to set your controller to a channel that SampleTank isn't set to listen to and handle channelizing to SampleTank from your host.

Ah, will try that. Thank you!

I have gone through rigorous testing, I have tried different procedures that IK Multimedia suggested and still nothing works, I think they now realise it is a iOS18 issue, and considering other apps had similar issues such as Synthmaster 2 where changing presets became a horrendous experience since the update, KVR331 issued a update that fixed it eventually.

    You are very welcome 🍻
If you had originally mentioned you were still on iOS16, I would not have even mentioned my issues.
I have just connected my external midi keyboard and selected SampleTank with midi set to Omni and also individual channel numbers, absolutely nothing, but selecting iwavestation (IAA) works perfectly, so it’s definitely Apple that’s the problem in my situation, sorry I can’t be of more help in yours.

I just had a chance to try this out. In "Live Mode" SampleTank listens directly to connected hardware and as far as I can find there is no way to tell it what devices to listen to. So, if you want it to not listen directly to the controller, clear the slot for the channel that your controller sends on -- you will need to channelize from AUM (or whatever host) to SampleTank.

  • @Dav - not exactly an answer, but if the solutions so far are complicated or don't work, would it make sense just to let SampleTank play, but mute the output in AUM?

  • Thanks guys. Well, I couldn’t get it to work yet. So, I resorted to using another bass sound while recording, and just switch to the SampleTank bass sound when mixing down.

  • One thing I always did "back in the IAA days" was to also (on top of AUM/AudioBus) open Midiflow and route all my midi through that. It was the one place I connected all my midi input devices and it was the one place where I connected midi instruments (or passing it on to AUM etc). The filtering (and modification) of midi signals is great in MidiFlow and will give you total control over which midi goes where. That obviously assume you can set it at all in Sampletank (and I can't be bothered to re-download it to test now).

Speaking of MidiFlow, it is the shame that the additional MidiFlow apps that were released with AB3 so completely are tied to AB3...they could be useful for other hosts too. But just to clarify, I am talking about the main (old) MidiFlow app, which is the "full-on" thing. You can convert notes to cc, you can split keyboard to different destinations or channels etc. Might be worth trying if all else fails.

Can you post screenshots of your aum routing and sampletank setup?

MidiFlow was and still is great. At least I think it still works. I haven't tried it for a long time.

However, some apps listen directly to hardware midi no matter what you do. If you can't intercept the hardware midi and pass it through MidiFlow (or any other app) there's nothing you can do. Some of the Korg apps were (and still are?) like this.

If the apps are IAA then presumably they can be loaded into AUM and then have their audio output muted even though they're still playing.
