Soundcloud= iOS disease. Any alternatives?

edited November 2014 in General App Discussion

Just a little report to say, if anyone posts a soundcloud link I will avoid it like the plague on iOS.

Embedded files crash my browser. If a page happens to load with an embed from SC, I dare not tap on it or I get a 5 second minimum screen freeze ( and still the sound file doesn't play). What is the deal? Anyone know why this happens? I'm on a iPad mini retina so it's not a hardware issue, right?

Anyway, if I really want to hear something from SC I open up my laptop. Which is fine... But lame. I used to love hearing little snippets of iOS creations that get posted on the forum here. Now I skip them if they are on Soundcloud.

Are there alternatives yet for sharing music, sketches, etc? Something that works on iOS?

  • I've not used it, but some folks on FB seem to like Bandcamp.

    Website: http://www.bandcamp.com

    App: https://itunes.apple.com/app/id706408639?mt=8

  • I use box on the desktop but don't know if you can play shared links on an iPad. https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/box-for-iphone-and-ipad/id290853822?mt=8

  • Bandcamp excels imo, it has no time limits and the ability to customize your own page. Private or public listings. The only limitation is single file size of 290Mb.

The problem I have @Flo26, is that I am unable to play anything posted here (or on Palmsounds etc.) on an iPad. As @Hmtx reports, links just hang after pressing the play button and this is just on single embeds. So unfortunately any of your tunes, which I always enjoy, have been sadly missed.

  • People seem to hate it, the only problems I've had with it have been when there are a large number of embeds on one page.

  • It's not that I hate it, I just find it incredibly frustrating at the moment. I am able to upload from AudioShare but then unable to play back in either Safari or Chrome.

I just got an email notification of a new track posted by a friend and again I am unable to listen to it.

It's just got to the stage where it's not worth the headaches using the service when the alternatives work flawlessly for me.

  • I'm not even frustrated, just find it comical, really. I might feel different if I had a lot of soundcloud content I was trying to share.

Zymos, what browser are you using that works with soundcloud on iOS?

  • Another vote for Bandcamp, really great service.

  • Soundcloud is a bitch.... and the app since V3 unusable too. There is no real competition for soundcloud out there yet....sadly.

  • I can play Soundcloud files on my iPhone and iPad via Safari ok most of the time, though viewing a page of their files glitches and it's a nightmare to scroll. Probably down to the site design so it may get fixed at some point.

  • hearthis.at looks like a very good alternative.Or Mixcloud.

  • Another +1 for bandcamp, just alot more flexible, no monthly fees they just take a % of anything you sell. You can customize the embed links to different sizes, does not seem to hang up on ios as much as SC. If you have your own website address you can even link so Bandcamp is your website routed from that address. When I did this a few years ago it was free but I think they may charge for that now, not sure. You can get your own website address for virtual peanuts btw

  • Clyp.it is free with no signup required.

It's tragic what's become of SoundCloud. It used to be a great site for musicians to network and share tracks. Ever since they redesigned the site it's gone to hell and has never come back. Their embeds get worse and worse over time and the mobile app is garbage.

I agree about trouble with their embeds. Just a few on one page is enough to slow down Safari on an iOS device, and if you add more you'll likely crash the browser entirely.

Bandcamp, on the other hand, has always been great, but if they want to kick SoundCloud in the nuts and steal their lunch money, they need to add more inter-user networking. Once they do, SoundCloud can die a slow miserable death, and they'll have earned it.

  • Our local alternative radio uses mixcloud, so..

  • I can no longer seek within the embeds when in Firefox. Chrome works fine.

iOS usually works ok. I use Chrome on iOS to visit the site. Not sure if that matters though since they both use the same browser engine.

Just Safari on iOS 7.1.2. But usually use the app.

  • You would think that Apple being so interested in Music would provide a way for iOS musicians to publish your own songs via iCloud? They used to have a Public folder on iDisk, part of mac.com, that you could give someone a link to, and they could download the file to their disk. If Apple could provide a streaming function on your personal iCloud Dive, dedicated for music, that might be an alternative to SoundCloud. Maybe they could tie it into iTunes as part of an indie discovery section.
