Casio CZ Sysex?

Hi there. Hope everyone is happy and well.
Been out of the iOS music scene for a couple of years and was wondering if any AUV3 apps have come along that can open and play the Casio CZ sysex files.

  • I’m not aware of any, but that would be a cool ios synth for someone to make.

Did find this desktop player though: https://www.pluginboutique.com/product/4-Synth/1158-VirtualCZ

    Wait a second…

Casio actually makes this. But it’s not clear if you can import your own sysex files or not. And I think it’s not an AUv3…And it hasn’t been updated in six years.

  • The Casio CZ app can not import SysEx files and the help button leads to a 404. I would not expect great things from this app going forward.

    Yep.

That's a great synth, I wish it was available as an AUv3 on iOS. Much better than the Casio app IMO.

Perhaps an enterprising developer will recognize this gap and take this on.

Yeah I might suggest it to them. It’s Plugin Boutiques own product I believe. They made Scaler for iOS, why not this?

Yeah, i read somewhere it doesn't. I wish they would just spruce it up. Can’t imagine they even remember they made it though.

There seem to be 2 other phase distortion synths for iOS (Phase Monkey and Phase84) but neither make mention of being able to open the CZ sysex.

  • CZ sysex is different from most sysex. It requires “handshaking” which means each file needs confirmation before moving on to the next one. I don’t remember exactly how it worked but back in the day sysex librarians for the CZ synths were unique to CZ while other librarians would work with most synths.

Nobody has made an app (including Casio) that is like the CZ series. When I was using hardware I always had 2 CZ-101’s as part of my “arsenal”. 😆 I loved them!

Ah. Thanks for the info. 🙂
Do you know if there’s any reason why desktop emulations like the Arturia or Plugin Boutique ones wouldn’t be able to keep that functionality if they chose to port them to iOS?

I don’t see why not but you never know. I’d like to see a CZ app that is exactly like the hardware without any extras except the ability to import CZ sysex. Kind of like KQ Dixie.

Oli Larkin, the developer of VirtualCZ, linked to an SoS review from 2015 where they said it was for the lack of documentation about the exact inner workings of the CZ hardware: https://www.olilarkin.co.uk/index.php?p=virtualcz

Reverse engineering is a lot of work and has been done on some Yamaha synth chips from the 80s but apparently there are not enough CZ fans out there.

Not to forget ShockWave from Kai Aras, not the most robust app but definitely my favorite "CZ style" synth, while admittedly not comparable to the "real thing" of course 😉

    Oh yeah 😊

  • On desktop the Arturia CZ emulation can read CZ sys-ex. I also have a real CZ3000. It was my first synth.

  • Arturia's also uses Oli Larken's code for VirtualCZ, so either is a fine choice for CZ fun on desktop, but Arturia's CZ is actively supported.

I did not know that. 🙂

Also includes a link to download the original CZ patches.

  • Oh well! No desktop for me. I’ll have to make do with the several hundred iOS synths I do have! 😁
