Best Arranger App

I love Loopy Pro, Koala, Drambo etc. for sketching out loops incredible.

I don’t really like Cubasis, despite getting some decent results. I don’t think it’s the fault of Steinberg. I find the interface on iOS really unresponsive to the touch gestures and you’re constantly having to undo and redo simple tasks.

What I’m after is something that works on iPhone and iPad that I can set to my chosen bpm, drag a load of audio in, arrange it on the grid so I’ve got a basic sketch of my track going.

I don’t especially need loads of timestretch options, hosting auv3 probably desirable. Gadget is also great but I find it a pain if I’m working with audio - why not just have some audio tracks instead of the sodding tape machines.

GarageBand - is this the solution? I opened it up again today and it looks like they’ve turned it into a looper as well.

I need copy / paste on the grid, change length of region with snap, select more than one at a time, a sensible timeline view, minimal bells and whistles.

  • Garageband should get you to where you need to go, and it's free.

    Ok thanks.

    I’ll have another try.

    Does it host auv3s?

  • GarageBand seems about right, with one exception - the loop triggering interface means that I have similar issues to what I have elsewhere on other apps namely I want to make offline edits by clicking not trigger the loop but due to the tiny screen on iPhone it seems not sure which command I’m after when I click.

Will rtfm and get stuck in but Loopy Pro’s gestures are so much better for this stuff - when it gets the midi lanes I’m 100% LP2.

Sounds like a good plan to me. :) Best of luck.

You seem to need the timeline in garageband, not the loops. It works exactly as you requested

  • @semtek01 - what is it about Loopy Pro's timeline that doesn't work for you for this?

You might consider looking at Multitrack DAW if Loopy and GarageBand aren't to your liking. It's been around forever and is very streamlined for the kind of work you're describing, while also having plugin hosting under the hood. It's $4.99 for the basic app with IAPs to add more tracks. Sorry, but I don't remember how many tracks the initial purchase gives you.

If you're thinking about looping, plus a decent timeline on iphone and iPad you might want to give Zenbeats a shot.
If it's just basic layout of your loops then Loopy does that wonderfully already.

  • Good call on Zenbeats @tentype.
Plus it's free to try. There's enough available in the demo version to get an idea of the workflow too.
