Loop 1 - short rhythm, loop 2 - multiplied, but not pre-defined
Hi,
I struggle with setting up loopy to do the following:
I saw a loop artist with an RC-600 online play 4 beats of percussion into the first loop, then play a longer bit of guitar into the second loop. While this sounds straightforward, I was not able to replicate that in Loopy Pro yet - despite checking a lot of tutorials and going through the manual.
The devil lies in the detail:
- It's (to my understanding) not free looping for the second loop, as it stays synced to the rhythm of the first loop
- The second loop's length is a multiplication of the first loop. While that is possible in Loopy Pro, I need to know in advance how long that loop will be. If I want a generic setup and not one for each song, I can't set that to a fixed number.
Also, I'm using loopy with guitar and voice / a midi pedal.
Is there a way so I can set up the loops that they stay in sync with each other, but that the second loop can be longer than the first one, but still locked to it?
Comments
Free loops can remain in sync. The difference between free and phase-locked groups is whether the playhead for the loop stops when the loop stops. As long as you use settings that record loops of compatible lengths and use play quantization to start loops at the correct time, free loops stay in sync.
Can you describe or demonstrate with a screen recording what problem you are having with this?
You may want to look at this tutorial which explains includes a starter project:

The tutorial may clarify some settings you need to change.
You may also want to look at some of the templates in the patchstorage repository.

Here a few that might be of interest, but it is worth browsing the repository

Once you have things as you like for starting new projects, mark the project as a template. Then when you start a new song you will be given the choice to start it based on that template. Then all you need to do is change that second loop's number of bars. You can set up buttons or a dial in your template to do that if you don't want to go through the normal swipe-up process to set the loop's length.
FEIW, I recommend staying away from pre-set loop lengths entirely and using either master cycle count-in/out which makes I simple to keep loops as multiples of the first loop recorded or using a custom recording count-in/out of 1 or 2 bars.
And turn off auto count out to have flexible loop lengths.
@espiegel123 - Thanks for the links - I found the setting I was looking for.
I took your simple looper example and experimented a bit. What I was looking for was that I needed to override the standard record settings on Loop 2 and set the count in quantization to master and the count out quantization to none.
That way I can record a short bit on Loop1 and a longer one on Loop 2.
Thanks for your help!
You probably don’t want none.
If you want your loops to be multiples of loop 1 use master with auto-count off. If you want them to be able to be any number of complete bars, set count-out to custom 1bar.
@multivir : if it isn’t clear, if you set the record count-out to master, if loop 1 is 1 measure long, loop 2 can be any number of measures as long as auto count-out is off
If loop 1 is two measures long then loop two can be any multiple of 2 .
