JWM - Friendship Is Golden (80s Easy Listening done in Cubasis 3)

This is definitely a style I've never produced before, but I really enjoyed crafting this music. This was client work for someone who wanted an instrumental in the 80s Adult Contemporary genre. So I went a bit of the Kenny G route.

Most of the sounds came from Halion (including the alto sax). The synth bass was Micrologue. The only external instrument plugin I used was Koala Sampler to lay out the drum tracks. I froze all the audio, and edited it from there. Hope you all enjoy this piece, and if you do, let me know! Cheers. :)

  • I enjoyed it very much. People on this particular forum may not be huge fans, but KG has sold over 75 million albums. Somebody is listening! While you may not dig the content, you must admit that his music is extremely well produced.

Personally, I love trying new things. In fact, I try to do that with every song. It’s probably not a recipe for success, but it’s chicken soup for my soul. I hope you do a few more like this. Nice track, buddy.

How about some good old country music! I was never a big fan, but my wife is, and she got me listening. Several years ago, we went to Nashville to see the Grand Ole Opry. We saw Roy Clark! It was most likely his last performance. We also saw Trace Adkins. He was drunk as a skunk! It was a great show. I highly recommend it if you’re looking for something different.

  • That sound great Jim. Nice to see you branch out in new territory. I am going to have to try that Halion alto sax.

I absolutely love Kenny G's music. "Songbird" is my absolute favourite, but all his music is great. I know some may consider his music a bit cheesy (and dated by today's standards), but sometimes cheesy isn't a bad thing.

Thank you kindly. And yes, it's chicken soup for the soul to try new things. I'll never become too old to try new things. :)

Ha! I actually did make a Country-themed EDM track last year called "Wicked Lies". Of course that blended Country with EDM, not straight-up Dierks Bentley-styled Country. Man, I saw Dierks live last year, and yes, he played "Drunk on a Plane" and so many other great hits! And Bo Bryce and the beautiful Ella Langley both opened for him.

I may consider doing a Country styled instrumental, whether Country Rock, soft Country, classic Country, etc. Garageband is great for laying out the backing guitars, Halion for acoustic guitar lead, OneShot for "live" drums with round robins, Madrid for that bass guitar (thanks to Korg a year ago making their gadgets AUv3), etc. Or if electric guitars, I got Santa Ana for backing guitars and GeoShred for the lead guitar. (I never was able to afford the GeoShred IAPs yet, but soon I will. Not in February though, because my big purchase of the month is GR-II.)

My favourite aspect about my Cubasis 3 workflow is being able to commit things to audio via track freeze and to edit further from there. No microedits for "Friendship is Golden", because such edits didn't really exist in mainstream 80s Easy Listening.

Thank you kindly, mate. This was a fun experience. Man, Halion has a lot of incredible sounds. Halion has pretty much replaced Korg Module Pro in my workflow (at least my DAW workflow, because in GR-II, Module will most likely make a comeback lol), and replaced Beathawk for the most part (except for Beathawk's "world" instruments).

And yes, I have all of Cubasis' IAPs. Only thing I could want for is an internal drum module or maybe Groove Agent or something, but meantime I have Koala to supplement that need.

  • I hate it !!!

This however is a compliment, you have absolutely nailed my least favourite style of 80s elevator music, great job, well done. ;-)

  • Holy shit Jim, you really nailed that style - I thought I was walking through a supermarket for a minute there! 🤣

Every little nuance is there - there’s no mistaking that has 80s written all over it.

Hahaha! 😂 That cracked me up. Cheers. 🍻

I'm glad. ❤️ I really dig this piece I made. It has that supermarket/80s mall feel to it, complete with neon lights.
