What I like to do

Put a bunch of samples into Koala and see what comes out.

That was my method here.🙂

  • I have been playing this along with a Pure Piano track that I have been working on.
Would you be interested in a collaboration?
    If not, no problem.

    Sure!

What do you need from me?

  • I sent you a message.

  • @rottencat Your ambience is great! Love seeing that you did this in Koala... that's inspiring. I have an sp404 mk2 and Koala and need to start learning them more and trying to use them for dark ambient/soundscape stuff. Any tips or insights into your process would be greatly appreciated! I guess questions that come to mind are:
    What kinds of samples?
Were there any fx on samples before importing? Or were all fx done in Koala? or a mix of both?
Do you make use of the busses to load up effects on some sounds? and or do you use the live fx? or buss out to AUM for more fx?
For this piece did you record any patterns? Or were you triggering samples in one take?
Any special challenges and solutions you ran into when trying to do ambient with koala?

I'm still very early in the learning phase, but I do find making continuously looping drones WITHOUT popping difficult.... and I think the fade in and out sample settings don't behave how I would like them to... and lack of xfade kills me... so I need to change my thinking on how I approach stuff.

Thanks in advance for any insight you might provide!

p.s. And just want to give a shoutout to @sevenape who did a really nice video about how he makes ambient in Koala.... need to rewatch that one!

  • @stown, first off I will recommend NervousCook$ tutorial series. There’s not a lot about ambience but I have found it to be invaluable in learning the nuts and bolts of Koala.

    Here’s a link to #1in the series.

I find samples in all sorts of places. The tonal part of this track was a few cutups of a much longer track that I bought on BandCamp. It’s here: https://akihikomatsumoto.bandcamp.com/album/ambient-drone-sample-pack

This pack is great. There’s tons of material and it is updated fairly regularly. $15.00 well spent, to my way of thinking.

The little voices you hear intermittently were something I found on the Looperman site. If you don’t know Looperman you’re missing something great.

I had 3 fairy sizable slices, each of a different length, which i mixed on the fly. It took a few takes but I eventually got something that I liked.

The little voices were sequenced in Koala on a second track in AUM. I put a lot of them on the piano roll and brought the probability way down low.

I don’t care for the effects in Koala. I do all that in AUM

I hope this helps you. I’d like to hear what you come up with.🙂

@rottencat thank you so much for that write-up! I'm not really a fan of the live fx in koala or the sp404 so I would be doing the AUM thing as well with Koala. Not sure when I will actually dedicate time to Koala... I feel like it's a distraction at the moment... I have a bunch of WIP pieces in Logic on my iMac for a collaboration release that I need to finish.... so I am torn on how I spend my time. That said.... some AUM noodles have become potential tracks for the collab. You mentioned 3 fairly sizeable loops of varied lengths. I do something similar with Gauss field recorder and chains of fx.

While not a koala piece, here are 3+ GAUSS loops of me plonking away on an old piano at my house plus another looped file of needle on vinyl noise... probably lots of use of WOOOT and Saturn2

p.s. The nervou$ cook videos are great... have watched like 1/2 the series

I like this very much. There’s something about the sound of a faded old slightly out of tune piano…

Gauss is great for tracks like this.

Here’s an idea - feel free to turn me down. I’m always on the lookout for like-minded oddballs.🙂

Maybe you’d like to try a collab?

    No pressure.

@rottencat Thank you so much for the kind words and for the interest in a collaboration. Unfortunately.... I operate at a GLACIAL pace, and the above track is for a collaboration album that I have been slooooooowwwwwwwly working on for the last 7 years. oof. Sadly, I feel totally creatively "constipated" until this collab is done and out of the way. All of my creative juices are reserved for it. :/ Will be great if it ever happens as we might actually get a decent dark ambient/experimental/noise label to release. He has releases on Malignant, Cyclic Law, and Cold Spring and I have one on Tesco. :) Fingers crossed for something good for our combined efforts.

So yes.... thank you very much..... but I am probably creatively occupied for at least the next year. :/ I briefly searched on your name here in this forum and am digging the tracks the search has led me to. Who knows? Maybe in a year.... :)
