Which synth for ambient drone

I’m fairly new to all of this so am just wanting a bit of a steer. I’m looking to learn a synth for ambient drone and was wondering what to spend time on. Synths I’ve bookmarked based on reviews are:

Borderlands
Ruismaker Noir
Spacefields
Fundamental2
Hilda
Stacks

Which one should I choose? Or anything I’ve missed?

Thanks for any advice

  • For granular also Tardigrain, FRMS, Bleass Granulizer.

Also, not synth but for generative drone nothing beats Wotja

  • SpaceFields isn’t a synth, it’s an effect. It is, however, superb!

Likewise Ruismaker Noir is a percussion synth, so I would think less drone friendly, unless you plan to process it enormously.

Otherwise the things you’ve already mentioned are a good start. Maybe add Fluss to the mix, and if you want to risk ending up deep in a rabbit hole MiRack. Solderbox is also worth a look, likewise Ripplemaker and if you want a playable drone synth it’s hard to beat Mononoke.

  • And actually Salome by Bram Bos is another playable one with a much superior touchscreen keyboard to Mononoke. Very good for drones, quickly and easily sample anything into it and play it mpe style.

  • Moog Marianna☀️ Or Moog Model 15.

If new to synths, Zeeon by beepstreet.
If new to drones/ambient, Factory by sugarbytes.
Also know, effects play a massive role. With such any synth can done/ambient etc.

  • really any synth or sound source will work, spend your money on good reverbs, delays, ringmods etc

  • Thanks for the advice, lots to get my head around!

    This 💯☝️

For instance, Stratosphere Cloud Reverb and FAC Alteza are my two top favourite reverbs for Ambient. Timeless 3 and Other Desert Cities for delays. (I honestly should look into using a ringmod plugin. I forgot if I have one or two, but that's what experimenting in Ambient means - trying new things. I swear, each time I go into an Ambient phase of production, it's to experiment to my heart's content and learn new techniques for producing other genres of music.)

  • Check out shoom too... it's basically 3 synths, a reverb and a delay, you can set it to drone forever

This....and also, Velvet Machine and Cascade...

Absolutely. For me, things with mpe compatibility are particularly well suited to playing drone music, at least for playing live, but basically any synth will work

  • It’s IAA but Droneo is still fantastic.

  • RIP his wallet heehee

I quite often leave my roli on the shelf but when I do use it I really love the results. Thanks for reminding me

Any synth with sawtooth OSC+4-7 detuned voices of unison+LFO on cutoff of LP filter+huge reverb.
Add other OSCs (Wavetable, sine,) maybe on different octaves to taste to add more spice.

  • Borderlands gives me a very nice and intuitive way to create drones from samples, probably some of the most organic drones that can be controlled by touches and moves.
What a bummer that it still doesn't support AUv3, this is quite a deal breaker for many...

  • Also, PaulXstretch will convert just bout anything to a drone texture.

It would be so so good as an auv3

    He definitely needs MagicBlur, then

  • if we're talking fx for drone.... Rymdigare, yaled, and Saturn 2 (I really love tweaking multiband distortions and then feeding them into long delays....). And several instances of Gauss Field Looper in AUM set to different lengths can be great for shifting phasing textures.

  • Spacecraft

This. The way its control surface is set up (with easy latch/unlatch, snap to notes grid or not) is perfect for drones.

  • Were going to map 6 Mononake, yesterday as have 3 ipads and encoder control for the 3 ipads. 2 apps on each screen.

Remembered mononake is maybe better mapped to midi ch 1.

If its ok to map to other midi channels.

    Might map.

Id officially be the controller of the most Lyras.

  • Il map 5.

Need some additional drum control and these extra parameters that dont fit on a faderfox pc12 ( are you mad ) need surface builder.

Salome looks sick! Not sure why I didn't buy it yet, but for 8 quid I'll check it out!
