Thought he said he was going to have a tips IAP? It sounds like he's joking, but I don't know him well enough to say for sure.
That would be a weird reason for a rejection indeed lol. There are plenty of great, free apps with no IAPs
Maybe they are desperate to get more money in the corporate coffers.
Nooo, Apple know as well as anyone that free stuff can be a great way to generate revenue. Loss leaders etc. Matt's comment has to have been a joke, I'd wager
Yes, but my point is that this must be a joke. Rejections are common, but rejection because an app is free? Makes no sense!
That said, I'm sure many a dev would have stories of apps being rejected for reasons that don't make sense lol. I still think the reason Matt gave is a joke, and the app must have been rejected for other reasons. Especially if it had multiple rejections
Then charge $1 for it.
Apple do not have a problem with devs making apps free, really
He keeps it free to comply with a school policy so they can use it without any hurdles.
My guess is the (possibly rookie) App Store reviewer is getting confused with how a tip jar (I think this app has / will have one?) has been implemented which, if memory serves, you need to set up as an IAP.
Which makes a lot of sense and is very kind of him
It is, I probably would have paid more attention to my music class if the teacher was a bit more technologically inclined!
Or you wouldn't have paid the teacher any attention and just played with the J6 app
It's kind to share that app for free, but remember this is the second app by the developer that he's giving away; Synth One is just amazing, it's totally free, and it's on par with any of the paid Audiokit apps. For sure it has to be the #1 free synth on iOS.
Do a tip thing, or link to the App Store to your other apps, they should green light it then
That's probably the real outcome 😅
You'd think I was kidding about my post, but it's WWDC time, and Apple must really need those earnings up. I've heard first hand accounts of completely free older apps without any kind of payment option sent warnings that they could be removed from the app store. No "Free loading" apps taking up bandwidth, I guess. No joke. Beginning of the end of an era, I guess.
So, instead of putting in their requested in-app purchases, I went ahead and added an external donate button. Because, honestly, I just like to mess with them. It should totally be in the rules!
I thought I had an airtight explanation:
It was in review for almost 18 hours (!)
Rejected again today. This is AI's summary of Apple's latest note:
"Here is my expert analysis of what has happened:
The reviewer has rejected your app again. Sending another letter of explanation is now guaranteed to fail. The reviewer is no longer reading your words; they are looking at your app's UI and making a final judgment based on what they see.
By sending this new screenshot, which shows the "DONATE" button in the context of a complex, professional-looking synth they are giving you a non-verbal message:
"I do not believe you. This app looks and feels like a professional product with premium features. Therefore, I believe this 'Donate' button is a way to pay for these features, which violates Guideline 3.1.1. My decision is final. Remove the button or add IAP."
**So my options now are to **
1) Appeal to the app review board. Which could take several weeks. I have an excellent case, but, it seems they make the rules ¯_(ツ)_/¯
2) Add IAP for donation
I do think it's a good idea for the app to make enough to sustain itself. Otherwise, apps get abandoned. And, it's nice for the app to have funds in case something happens to me so that other devs would be motivated to continue
So, I guess, I'm going to add the donation IAP. I apologize for the delay.
If anyone was planning on donating, I'll leave up the external donation page:
https://donorbox.org/synth-one-j6
This will not give Apple a cut, making your donation stretch further!
Thanks again for everyone's support!
@analog_matt ah, so they don't want you to offer a donation method they can't profit from, that is kinda sucky but makes more sense and is consistent with much of their recent behavior I guess. But yeah, the issue is of course not actually that the app is free, right?
I hate to be that guy, but I'm guessing a 15% hit (unless you're making more than $1M a year) isn't really Apple profit is it?
Unless you expect hosting app downloads, distributing app updates, processing the IAP transaction, collating and paying that money into your bank and providing a store front for the whole thing to be FREE?
Remember the Spotify debacle years ago when they tried to sidestep payment via the App Store? They just don't like it, and I for one, kinda see why that is.
Like I said earlier, my understanding was "tip jar" (edit: within the app) = IAP
Just to be clear, I'm addressing the folks that have this view that the 15% comission is somehow, "unfair" for want of a better word.
I heard from an inside source that Apple might not be featuring new apps that don't have some sort of IAP or Subscriptions anymore. So maybe they're trying to help me here. Maybe they like the app, and don't want it to miss out on being spotlighted in the App Store.
I'll just assume the best right now, in case Apple is reading 😅
I can also understand this tbh
They literally rejected it twice before the donation button, asking things like:
"Where are the paid features unlocked?"
"Can users access any paid presets in this app?"
How someone reads into those questions, is up to them...
Maybe it's time to get in touch with Ricky Tinez who is now one of the new top-dogs over at Apple?
Another option is naturally to distribute it via TestFlight but that might not work for schools etc...
In the meantime, I made a little home made intro video for the app
Well that was absolutely lovely! and now I wanna make noise with this thing EVEN MORE!!! Haha
Good job Matt! That must have been a lot of work to make
I used to own a Juno 6. That looks and sounds fabulous, @AnalogMatthew!
Love this! The app looks great. I’ll be donating.
Can you do a Prophet one next and charge for it? 😉
