JWM - Dragon Skies (19 Years Later)(EDM Created in GR-II)(Now with Extended Version)

I swear, I set out to craft Minimal Techno ala Richie "Plastikman" Hawtin. Honestly, I fucking did. That's the original reason I purchased Groove Rider 2, with its integration of Pure Acid and Poison-202. 😂 But after I repurchased the DSK Music soundfonts, I couldn't get this old tune out of my damn head.

So, instead of Minimal Techno, I created Maximal EDM instead. 🤣 So what all did I use?

GR-II's internal synth. I used drum samples from Black Octopus Leviathan 4, Sounds of KSHMR Vol 4, and the KB6 drum samples. And I used the DSK Music soundfonts that I used in the original 2006 version of "Dragon Skies". I also stuck to internal effects only. That maximiser for instance is pretty bloody ripper on the master effects!

What I love about GR-II is it forces a producer into a certain workflow. I personally find the workflow to be quite logical, fitting neatly within how I usually produce music in other creative environments and DAWs. You have a sound, filter, ADSR envelope, an LFO, and it feeds into three effects which feed into a nice three-band EQ (with two styles of EQing). The reverbs are available as send effects only, but honestly that's all one really needs.

Anyways, this was definitely one helluva start into my journey with GR-II sans manual. 😂 A more far more ambitious project than simply setting up polyrhythms, polymeters and shit. A decent way to familiarise myself with how the automation works in Song Mode as well.

Cheers, and I hope you enjoy. I hope my next project in GR-II is a piece of Ambient. 🙏

Mercí mon ami. :) Appreciate you.

You won't believe this, but I got the idea for an Ambient piece mixing in with HipHop beats. Although I plan to set the Hiphop beats to the background and add a touch of reverb to them down one of the IFX chains. (The great thing about IFX chains is I can have a reverb or two, and then an EQ to adjust the timbre of the reverb only! Comes quite in handy, that.)

;) I plan to surprise myself too.

  • And here is the "Xtended" version of the new version of "Dragon Skies". Same app, but this time mastered with Grand Finale 2 and NoLimits2 on the master effects. Sounds a lot more lively than the radio edit, lol. 😂

  • Excellent mix and production quality. Nice work @jwmmakerofmusic

Thank you kindly mate. :) Groove Rider 2 is quickly becoming my new go-to music creation environment, especially given that Nanostudio 2 is on the way out (which really, really sucks).

  • I was kind of disappointed when you were on the fence about it as it really seemed like it would work well for you. Interesting to get a glimpse into your past endeavors though, and once again something different.

Got to give this another listen as I’m not sure I took it all in first time.

Yeah, I'm surprised I was on the fence about GR-II as well. 😂 Well, the reason I was hesitant was I waited for a manual to be released. Then I purchased GR-II after watching Doug's first video about it. Again, I awaited a manual. But, after a couple more videos from both Doug and Leo, I learned the barebones basics, and figured the rest out myself. It's an absolutely intuitive app!

    That's what she said. 😏

LOL! Yeah, this track is a pretty busy track with a lot of shit going on in it at once. It's one of those tracks one needs to relisten in order to grasp the layers and such.

  • I wish I had gotten along with the original Groove Rider. I could never wrap my head around it. Hearing this track makes me second guess not trying harder. This sounds amazing. I really kinda wanna try GR2 now. Damn you.😂

Haha! 😂 Oddly enough, I never really got into the original GR-16 either. However, GR-II is a bit more like Nanostudio 2 in many of its operations. If you've used Nanostudio 2, you may get on with GR-II just fine.

You don’t really need a manual with those guys around.

    I agree 110%. 😉

That's pretty good! Actually, a number of your songs there have performed quite well.

Seems so! I mean, I normally get a couple hundred hits on songs on average due to the SoundCloud feature putting the songs in front of listeners who may appreciate them. However, when a song hits over 1000 listens, that's when I know it's an extra special song. Thanks mate. :)
