PSA: if you opted out of Apple Intelligence after updating to iOS 18.3, 18.3.1 will enable it again

18.3 made Apple Intelligence and opt-out rather than opt-in feature, which I decided to disable when I updated a few weeks ago. I updated to 18.3.1 today and noticed that Apple Intelligence was enabled once again. This is PSA in case you don't want the feature enabled, and in particular in this forum since some Siri features cause compatibiility issues with sample rate adjustments.

Comments

  • When updating to 18.3, I saw a screen describing Intelligence, and offering a "Continue" button, which I hit, seeing no other option. Maybe that screen is scrollable, offering more options farther down. Need to wait for the next update to find out.

Apple has always assumed we must have made a mistake if we decline their obviously superior features. They're only saving us from ourselves.

  • @uncledave I believe that there was no other option when updating to 18.3. What I saw has apparently been confirmed by others: https://www.macrumors.com/2025/02/11/apple-intelligence-re-enabled-in-latest-updates/

  • I haven’t seen any options come up for “Apple Intelligence”, even though I’ve updated my phone to 18.3 then 18.3.1 …

Maybe it's already enabled, or maybe your device is not compatible. Also, the data takes 8 GB of storage; your device may not have the room.

Edit: See this for minimum requirements.

    IT IS INEVITABLE, etc.

Ah, that is indeed the case. Thanks. Slightly older iPhone model, so none of that particular garbage, glad to say.

    It's the future

  • This happens again when upgrading to 18.3.2

Interesting, I wonder if it's done on a model-by-model basis then.

  • Apple does not collect your information or sell it to others, unlike literally every other company.

  • I'll give the Apple AI 'stuff' a go once it's available here in the EU (starting with iOS18.4/iPadOS18.4) now that I've also got a phone (regular black 128GB iPhone 16) that can run it...

Sure, but I don’t understand how this is related

It depends on the device meeting the requirements, as mentioned here. It pretty much requires a recent, high-end device.

Since iPad Air 5 does meet the requirements, I thought that @musikeer just hadn't seen this specific issue (Apple Intelligence being re-enabled after every update) when updating to 18.3.2

  • Is there a specific way to full turn off Siri? I never use in on my iPad and if causes audio issues the away it goes!

    😀🤣😂
Thanks for reminding us of Apple’s benevolent wisdom.

If you use online storage (for example, iCloud), that's something Apple cannot protect in England due to new requirements which passed and every business must comply with that law there. On the other hand, everything that remains on your iPhone or iPad is encrypted and Apple does not have a backdoor to that information. Anything that travels over "public networks" could be vulnerable to hacking or to court orders which Apple would have no choice but to comply.

It is encrypted so 3rd parties cannot see it. Apple is not a 3rd party and can see any data on your device prior to it being “encrypted”. Same thing applies to android and google and it is enabled under the guise of looking for “inappropriate” images. At the same time law enforcement around the world pretend to be obsessed with child exploitation as a guise of viewing content on devices before it is encrypted so they can “overcome” encryption with the help of Apple and Google.

  • It starts!

  • No Apple(un)Intelligence in the EU until iOS/iPadOS18.4 drops...
