Lots of tech for the National Anthem!

Jon Batiste sang the National Anthem during the Super Bowl. He was singing with a backing track (which I expect for this type of event). I have no idea why he has so much equipment on top of his piano:
Native Instruments Maschine+
Novation LaunchControl XL
Soundforce SFC-8 controller

All 3 are custom wrapped to match the piano.

  • Yeah. Something inherently comical about this. Maybe he was working on his own music while waiting, lol.

    And no wires. 😉
    oops.

  • I think he did a decent job with the anthem, but honestly? Having the extra gear without wiring was just for show, and came off as rather ludicrous if not outright gauche. Or as @Blipsford_Baubie said, comical. "Cringe" as the older kids say, and "skibidi ohio rizz" as the younger kids say. 🤣 Even more cringe than a 40-year-old man trying to type Gen Alpha slang.

Nothing new in that. Whole bands have had their stacks of amps and everything else with no guitar and mic cables performing "live" since the advent of TV. Only musicians ever notice.

At least he wasn't lip syncing. 😎

  • No wires?

There are wires clearly visible on the video and the still.

Before he starts playing, he adjusts some faders, presses a pad that plays a one bar percussion motif that plays quietly before he hits the first piano notes.

Maybe, he considered doing more with them and didn’t. Maybe he triggered the keyboard backing track from it.

You're right. I only glanced at a single frame of the video where they were only visible if you looked hard. Didn't watch the video.

  • He really seemed to be singing and playing the piano and I liked his rendition of the National Anthem. I also liked the woman who sang with the small cadre of players who gave the song a nice New Orleans spin.

I really did not like the halftime act. That act seemed like a gimmick gone wrong. I still think the best halftime act ever to appear at the Super Bowl was Prince.

I don’t remember seeing it, but I’d bet he was good, Prince was an incredibly talented musician.

Being a huge fan of Doc Severisen, I had bookmarked a clip of him and Al Hirt at the very first Super Bowl half time show ever in New Orleans. Half time shows sure have changed over the years….

  • I thought this year’s halftime show was great and definitely not the typical halftime entertainment.

If you get a chance to watch the entire Prince show at the Super Bowl, it's pretty great.

Kendrick was phenomenal! Best halftime show since Dre and company 2022.

  • I'm still getting over seeing a Korg Electribe 2 as part of the tech in the lab in The Flash.
