What's your actual workflow with audiobus?

I've bought a few apps, upgraded audio bus and tried connecting a few instrument chains i've experienced a few crashes, cpu load and midi sync timing was fluctuating by up to 5bpm with one setup i tried.

I was thinking of buying Auria as a tape recorder and using that to send sync to apps loaded into AB so i can stop and start recordings on playback but i'm concerned there might be unforseen issues with that. The alternative seems to be to record all parts seperately and then import them into Auria or get something like Gadget and import stuff into that. All i want to do is basic arrangements at the moment, somewhere to cobble my noodlings together. :D

Cheers.

  • My workflow depends on what I'm doing but if you're looking for basic arrangements and a reliable noodle cobbler, consider BeatMaker 2.

  • Cubasis handles midi and audio files pretty well for me.

  • +1 for Beatmaker2, my workflow on ipad2 is pretty much recording tracks via audiobus one by one in to BM2 in tape recorder style. The mix automation in BM2 is great you can automate all your track levels, fx send levels and fx parameters either by recording data in using knobs and faders or drawing in the automation.

    ...

  • for me, I don't usually record more than one audio part at a time:

DAW midi out --> Synth --> AB --> DAW record new audio track.

  • Another Beatmaker2 user here.

I'm with @Coloobar - though I have varied that a bit in recent days.

    But normally:

    In AB:

    Synth -> FX -> DAW

    Rinse and repeat.

I may well load more FX in the DAW too though.

  • I use Caustics as my All In One music studio then steam export into Auria.

  • @syrupcore i think any music made on ios will be under the name of noodle cobbler haha! BM2 looks good, i have a Quneo as well and have been looking for an app to pair it with. Still undecided on that as everyone raves about Gadget but the price is good and seems to pack a lot of features.

@Tritonman2 i was looking at Auria for the IAP effects to mix my desktop tracks but also using it as the hub for recording tracks from other apps in AB, plus it's on sale!

@RedSkyLullaby sounds good thanks. How is the midi timing with BM2?

@Coolobar that's what i was thinking, swapping apps out for each part. I think there are issues with ios8 at the moment or it's the apps but stacking a few in AB is causing problems. Need solid midi sync for clock driven stuff though and i was wondering if Auria may not be rocksolid and i'd have to buy midibus or bridge.

    Cheers Thomas.

@Music Inclusive also what i was thinking, AB for realtime fx processing with stuff then adding reverb and dynamics afterwards.

@Shay i need to check out Caustic as well, i guess i'm put of by the GUI; looks very retro! Kindas reminds me of Orion. :)

Does it have IAA and can you load an app into AB driven by a sequencer and record to an audio track or record the midi into Caustics sequencer?

    Cheers.

  • @musikmachine The midi in BM2 is pretty good, midi sync in general on iOS seems pretty hit or miss. Some midi clock masters for some reason are just not compatible with some apps as Slave. For example cannot midi sync Samplr using BM2 as master

  • @musikmachine - all real time. in-DAW FX too.

  • It's a shame GB doesn't have sync but the IAA works surprisingly well. I didn't see you could load effects till i watched an STR, those things are really valuable for iPad users. :)

    If anyone's interested:

I thought it was limited to the built in Echo and reverb! I'm still getting used to making music with one so i may just stick with GB for now as i can put effects after the instrument and run Thesys with an instrument nested if i can suss out how to print the audio! And then use Auria to mix.

    Cheers.

  • I mainly use AB to record synths into Auria that aren't available as IAA directly. I don't use any midi sync personally, I just record everything as audio in real time as I play it live and trim it in Auria if I need to line anything up. A single pipeline works fine for me, and I only ever use one synth app at a time. Smooth sailing the last couple weeks, no issues at all.

Can't wait to hear about the improvements/differences you've noticed with the ipad air 2... hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiint :D

  • I can run a few more synths in the background without worrying about RAM warnings, that's about all I've noticed in use. :)

Thanks a lot Tarekith! Via midi keyboard or do you play the tactile on screen keys? ;P

There's a YT video showing Thesys driving Thor being recorded into Auria which is sending clock to Thesys so Auria looks good.

Anyway, think i'm gonna buy it and keep checking out these other apps. Cheers y'all!

  • Don't think my ipad2 would handle most iOS DAWs so I record single chains into GarageBand. Not ideal as it's a basic old thing with no proper mix control, so if I want to fiddle with the mix I'll export each track as a separate stem into Logic on my Mac. Looking forward to upgrading so I can take advantage of the new shiny things, though an imminent purchase of the new iMac makes it unlikely anytime soon..

  • Hi @monzo

Maybe you should try beatmaker2? It's great and pretty efficient to run. I used to run it on my iPad 2.

It's good value for what it does.

  • Yar, give BeatMaker2 a shot. Also, I thought you could open garageband ios projects directly in logic?

Thanks for the suggestion - I fell out with Beatmaker though after buying the original at full price, and then finding it abandoned for the almost identical V2. Once bitten :(

I didn't have much luck importing projects into Logic, maybe I need to give that one another go!

  • Yeah, that was a bit of a shit show I was luckily not nipped by. Hopefully this time they go ahead and add something to the app store page as they get closer to the release of the new version that lets buyers know BM3 is coming soon and there is no upgrade path.

  • I'm starting to get a bit of a flow going with GB now, it's quite intuitive with the IAA and fun running stuff through effectrix and doing live edits of the fx. I also didn't know you could copy audio from AS straight into GB so that opens things up a bit.

@Flo i was thinking of eventually getting another iPad if my needs grow with the Apollo stuff would be an awesome sound design and performance rig.

  • @monzo +1 for trying BM2. I use it on ipad 2 and as long as recording 1 track at a time have never run into issues with 15 or 16 tracks playing with mix automations of track vols, fx parameters and fx sends

I'll have another play with it and see how it goes - nice to know it's working well on the ipad2 though! I really like the look of Auria but I think it'd be glitch city on my iPad.

It's a shame GarageBand doesn't get any updates - it's just a couple of features short of being a really good app. Volume automation, for example would make it much more powerful. Still a useful sketch tool though.

  • Yeah GB is a good app but too limited unless you just use the built in instruments which aren't bad. Midi sync, automation and been able to edit wavs would make it much better, i thought there were IAPS when i started using it.

Bought Auria anyway, hopefully it will resolve midi clock issues. Seems more straightforward to get stuff in and out anyway but again didn't realize instruments could be loaded into the effects slots so don't have go through AB every time i want to record something which is cool! I was having issues with Oscilab which now syncs away. Happy days. :)

@monzo how many tracks would you use? Apparently you can manage the settings to run more smoothly on an iPad 2 but memory can be an issue and if you want to use fx on every track freeze is a must but it should be able to handle 16-30 tracks with an external interface.

Probably no more than 8....do you think that'd be ok on an ipad2? The sale ends tomorrow so I'd better make my mind up!

In the studio I use the Qunexus, out and about I'm fine with the onscreen keys.

I couldn't say, only experience is with the Air, just stuff i read on the Auria forums: http://auriaapp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=10354

Looks like it will run, at least i don't think it's gonna make your iPad fall over unless you're doing big projects. I'm impressed with it anyway, easy to get going with, arm track and record, simples. :)

You did actually say synths via IAA but it can't have sunk in.

I'm using my quneo for basic input, need to create some scale templates and set up bank switching for octaves but i'll just use Thesys and Lemur for now but i am thinking about a Qunexus. Still in the see how it goes phase with my ipad but Auria is impressive. Cheers.
