My "Xperience" with Groove Rider 2 (aka "The Making of a new Album")

I'm honestly not sure which category this falls under (whether "General App Discussion", here in Creations, or in "Other Music Content"), but I place this thread here for now since I'll be showing off progress on my own tracks.

So when I first got Groove Rider 2, I was a bit timid to dig in given the lack of a proper manual. However, with many thanks to @thesoundtestroom and @sfm , I've learned Groove Rider 2 inside and out. And my remake of "Dragon Skies" was the first full track I made within GR2.

What a hell of a way to get started in a new app. 😂 My first foray into GR2 was actually planned to be Minimal Techno ala Richie Hawtin, but as you hear, this is not the case.

So I'm planning a new album titled "The Xperience" to be made entirely in GR2. This will consist of remakes of old tracks from the mid 2000s (aka when I first started to produce music!)

I finished work on the intro version of the title track of the album and tested out recording the live mix.

At first, I tried to do so in AUM, but AUM fucked everything up by tempo locking GR2 to its own tempo. 😲 So then I tried AudioShare, and that works a treat. (Although now I wonder what other IAA audio recording apps I could use that don't tempo lock GR2, but so far it seems AudioShare is the winner?)

I'm unsure what the other 10 tracks will be just yet, but as I listen back to my old music (and cringe once in a while), I'll be sure to pick out the right tracks to remake and put into this "Xperience" album.

Stay tuned to this thread for future updates to this album.

So yeah, updating this "journal" a little. I put aside producing the "Xperience" album to produce what I wanted to produce as my initial track in GR2, aka Minimal Techno like Plastikman. Took me about an hour and a half from start to finish.

Forgot to update this journal with this throwaway piece of Minimal Techno, lol. 😂 (Well I consider it a throwaway piece of Minimal Techno, but ymmv regarding your enjoyment of the piece.)

It's been a strange and somewhat tragic week so far (personal reasons), but I'm back in the production game. I'm now creating a new piece of music for the upcoming "The Xperience" album. It's sort of like an instrumental Sash! track. Thick drums, deep bass, pizzi sound, and I discovered the magic of the A.40 Hoover preset for Poison-202. I sent a demo of it to Mr. Pavloff.

I will say, since Nanostudio 2 will be sunset in a couple months, I dug down deeper into learning and producing with GR2. I'm learning some new techniques specific to its workflow and am really enjoying myself immensely. I have a handle on how to use that warp mode in the sampler and other such operations. I've yet to attempt using the wavetable synth. 😅 But soon I will test that out. I've learned how to make great basslines with the built-in synth. Very simple to dial up. And with the layering and IFX routing per layer, oo. Exquisite.

I also haven't used clip mode yet, and not sure if I'm interested in that to be honest. At least for the sake of my "Xperience" album. I may mess around with clip mode in a Minimal Techno experiment or for Ambient. We shall see.

But man, GR2 is the ultimate groovebox on iOS. $35 well spent in my opinion. Can't really get much better than this regarding Grooveboxes. Its limitations (3 IFX, no AUv3 effects outside of send and master effects, etc) don't stop me from producing the music I want to make. Well then again, I used to have an OP-1 Field and worked within those limitations (including rerecording parts, destructive editing, etc), so I'm used to trying out new things and pushing said limitations.

For instance, the title track "The Xperience" features some vocals I recorded and processed in Cubasis 3, and played back using the drum rack. No audio tracks? No problem. This is similar to how I did vocals in Nanostudio 2, using Slate.

I'll miss Nanostudio 2 for sure, because it had a huge fun factor for me. That said, GR2 has a bigger fun factor for me personally. Of course Cubasis 3 will continue to be my main DAW of choice, especially for client work. I just love GR2 a lot.

Okay, enough gushing out of me. (Yes, I'm high af rn.) So I'm off to bed now.

Really happy for you finding a workflow and apps that you click with. The combo of GR2 and C3 is indeed a powerful as your main tools, having both the traditional DAW and the more playful groovebox way! Keep the music flowing, regardless of means!

I listen to all your tracks either here or on Soundcloud but I don’t comment as much, sorry about that!

  • Good stuff jwmmakerofmusic

  • @DMfan All good. I'm glad you listen to my tracks though regardless of how much you comment or not. :) That means a lot to me. Thank you.

And yes, GR2 and CB3 make for a great combo imho. Although, I bet if I used GR2 as IAA in CB3, CB3 would impose its tempo on GR2. 😅 Definitely not ideal. So I use GR2 inside of AudioShare instead. (I'm not sure there's a way to make GR2's bpm independent of CB3's, but we have the manual, so time to rtfm. Lol.)

@cyberheater Thank you mate. :) This journal will be updated as progress is being made on the album.

  • Here's a sample of the third track created in Groove Rider 2 for the "Xperience" album! Enjoy!

  • Others are like "GR2 is too limited". Me producing client work...
