Not a DJ, but tryin' to Scratch :: Updated Scratch Attempts

edited February 17 in General App Discussion

Hi,
I want to take notes from my violin (see the attached wave file "Vio-Sound"), and transform them into a record scratch sound (see the attached wave file "scratch").

I tried the Transit 2 plugin, using FAC Envolver as an envelope follower to generate MIDI to turn the "T" knob on transit, and using a pitch shifter module in transit. I couldn't get it.

Any other ideas????
I did not want to use MIDI, I want plugin fx to turn my violin audio into a scratch. You can hear that I am playing two notes rhythmically to simulate the scratch..... but I need some fx to morph it

My apologies for not stating this at first. I am using Loopy Pro, and the fx I am looking for are AUV3 plugins, to achieve this scratch sound in real time.

Scratchless in Seattle

UPDATE 02/17 - at the recommendation, I added some sample of me bow scratchin', by sliding my left hand fingers up/down the fingerboard and using distortion and a pitch shifter.

Thanks!!

  • When I play violin it all sounds like scratch.

You could combine glissando and bear down on the bow when it needs it. You might be able to convincingly create the effect yourself without additional software. :)

Actually, if you have GarageBand on your iPhone or iPad (it's completely free for iOS and iPadOS, after all), you can use the "Remix FX" function to get that scratching and record playing effect live. Here's a tutorial:

Here's a quick example from your supplied .wav file:

Brilliance..... that answer is pure brilliance!!!

  • @NeuM - Sorry, I'm looking for plugins I can use in Loopy Pro for real time fx /scratching
Yes - I can slide (glissando) up the neck. I get a pitch shift or note change.... literally. But there's no scratching.
The real scratch sound like the record scratch is more than just a pitch change..... there's like a ripping or fuzz or something in addition to the pitch change.

  • What about ScratchBud?

Do either Effectrix or Turnado have a scratch effect?

You'd be surprised what a little distortion could do for you... have you tried that? Distortion and feedback might be one more way you could approach this.

I am watching the videos now.... on Scratch bud, but it seems it takes pre-recorded audio. I emailed Cem, the Scratch Bud dev, and his reply seems to suggest it only works on pre-recorded audio.

I watched the Effectrix promo vid. They want a ton of $$$ for it, although the empty shell is free.

    Uhhhh

  • @NeuM
I will try that. Mixing glissando (string slides up and back down), with distortion. I'll also try using FAC Envolver to trigger a tear or rip sound in a sampler, with an increasing volume over time.

Maybe I'll post my results. It's kinda sad, there are so many copycat plugins being developed while so many ideas are left undeveloped.

It's 2025, it should be easy for ANY guitarist (instrumentalist) to be a DJ.

    Thank for the suggestion!!

  • @sigma79 RIGHT THERE.... that's what Imma talkin' bout. Every violin player's dream. I want to do all of that with my violin.

Sounds files, images and videos - coming soon.

Scratch Bud should take incoming audio

  • Hey Everyone..... thanks for the suggestions, the scratchin' and the hydrocortisone cream

@Halftone - so it can process audio in real time? It doesn't have to be pre-recorded? The dev didn't state that in his email. It could be a miscommunication on how I wanted to use it.

Here's some audio samples and a video
    1) AUDIO: Using Eventide's Crush Station plugin
    2) AUDIO: Using FabFilter's Saturn
    3) VIDEO: Using Transit - turning the 'T' knob, via an envelope filter and FAC Envolver

NOTE: As crazy as it sounds.... at some point, I'd like to add voice or speak into a mic....while scratching. and THIS IS WHY... in my first audio samples, I did not "slide" (glissando) my notes, I just played the "scratch rhythm" or feel, with the same, simple, open notes.

In the audio samples provided here in this comment/post - I am sliding my fingers up the fret board to change pitch manually.

Let me know which samples sound close to scratch....and any tweaking you might suggest.
NOTE: In the first two samples, I play some generic rif so you can hear the distortion on the instrument before I do the sliding or scratching.

Thanks Again - for all the Input
    AJ
