What iOS Music Production Apps Need in 2025

Two under-utilized iOS features in music production: Widget and Shortcut implementation.

Widgets to quickly open your last project from the home screen or a sequence player on the home page would be cool. Shoot, an XL widget could have some keys or scales to interact with.

Shortcuts could have some interesting applications. I would love to have a shortcut for opening a few specific Lumbeat Drummers simultaneously. Setting up a shortcut for MIDI routing or communicating between AUM and Cubasis are some other examples I can think of.

The less friction there is between the artist and creating music the better. Using Widgets and Shortcuts would save a lot of screen taps to get a project up and running.

Edit: scratch my last edit. Got mixed up on some iOS and macOS version features. But these iOS features have been out for around 5 years now and I still can’t open my last project from a widget…nutz

The money side of things is an issue for sure. I dont have any bright ideas about mending that.

Just to be a tedious nerd about the MPE point, the '5 dimensions of expression' thing was actually part of Rolis Seaboard marketing, in the sense that 2 of those dimensions arent actually a part of the MPE spec. Release velocity is part of the main MIDI spec, its not actually in the formal MPE spec, and so if people dont include that functionality its a different/broader issue. But sure, I can see how it is part of some users perceptions/expectations, especially if they are used to things like Equator.

Possibly an even bigger issue, certainly in terms of instant gratification, is that many MPE-capable instruments dont ship with presets that make use of MPE. This problem isnt unique to the ipad scene though, its true of some computer soft synths and certainly most of the MPE-capable hardware synths.
