Need reco for 5 Pin/DIN MIDI to USB interface...

I'm not sure what happened, but something about the way the iPad uses USB MIDI interfaces must have changed in an update because the 2 5pin to usb interfaces I have don't work with my ipad. I bought a brand new one on Amazon and it didn't work either.

I know it's not the controller because it works fine with audio interfaces that have 5 pin.

Can someone point me to one that they know works with modern ios OS?

  • Go for CME WIDI. 3ms latency.

CME also makes 5 pin to USB cable. Two actually, basic one for $20 that has 1-in-1-out for 5-pin midi, and a $30 one that can also connect two 5-pin devices :

I don't have those CME cables, but I would buy them if I needed another. I have and like the $30 ESI Midimate, which is good because it can drive midi-in of two different midi 5-pin devices at same time: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1359718-REG/esi_esi_mmex_midimate_ex_usb_2_0.html

3 ms latency spec for CME Widi is only if you've got CME Widi devices on both ends. . .

If you want to use a cabled interface I have had good luck with the iConnect MIDI.

The cheaper generic ones will probably not work on iOS because Apple has a whitelist of “designed for iOS” hardware devices. There seem to be some USB classes that do not require this but my generic USB MIDI adapter that works fine on Windows will not work on iOS/iPadOS.

  • @MonkeyDrummer . As long as your interfaces are USB class-compliant, they ought to continue working with your iPad. I suspect your problem may be elsewhere in the connection chain.

    • Have these interfaces ever worked with this iPad?
    • Which iPadOS version has the problem?
    • How are you connecting to the iPad, Lightning or USB-C? Dongle, hub, dock, what exactly?
    • How are you detecting this failure? Which app?
    • Have you tried other apps, maybe AUM or Loopy Pro?

I just got a retrokits rk-006. If you end up wanting to change things up.

Its on the way at least. So i haven’t got to try it yet….. But it seems to play very well with iOS hosts like AUM from everything I’ve read and seen… and even has an iOS app to change things around so you don’t need to use one of those annoying laptops 🧑‍💻 😆

Its a lil pricey, but the things it can do are beyond the basics!

The i/o on the hub is trs-a midi tho, so you can’t plug the 5 pin in without an adaptor or use trs-a to din5.
