8.3" screen for music production - iPad mini 7

Hi guys, I’ve been working on music production on an iPad Pro 12.9” for several years now, and while the larger screen has advantages, I’d like to know if anyone is seriously working on an iPad mini 7 (AUM, Drambo..) I’d appreciate some screenshots of an iPad mini 6 or 7 working with AUM and some comments on your experience using music apps.

Comments

  • I had no problems doing big productions on an iPhone 4, but that was with NanoStudio 1. I doubt that pinnacle of small-sceeen UI excellence can ever be achieved again 😄

  • You can hold an ipad mini, so its generally bigger than a bigger ipad, screen perspective wise.

Sold my ipad mini 5 ( not because of screen size )

but a couple of synths like ripplemaker ( half screen ) and shockwave ( half screen ) were decent kit.

Obviously sequencers will be different than full size ipads but Drambo does have the bar mode. Where you can easily edit bars ( I think best on 8 bars )

  • I think ipad mini production is @jwmmakerofmusic territory.

Well, let me tell ya. AUM can be a little tricky to use on a small screen, but it's not horrible by any means. Only drawback is you can't comfortably fit more than one plugin at a time on the screen, whereas on the M1 iPad Pro I got in 2022, I can fit a good 2-3 on screen at once.

(Then again, I haven't used AUM in at least a solid 2-3 years. I didn't like the Ambient I produced in AUM back in Summer 2022 compared to the Ambient I produced in Cubasis 3 last month for Jamuary 2025. So in other words, I really don't have any screenshots at the moment.)

As Tentype correctly guessed, I use an iPad Mini 7 for many reasons. The main reason is...the 12.9" Pro is fucking heavy and bulky. I may as well be using a laptop. 😂

Well okay, to be fair, I used an iPhone 14 Pro Max with 1TB storage exclusively for a year (save for an album I produced on a cheap Android tablet) since the Mini 6 only went up to 256gb storage space, which isn't enough for what I do. As soon as the Mini 7 dropped, I bought one with 512gb storage! Haven't used my iPhone much since.

Matter of fact, today I was at the auto repair shop, right? And I took my Mini 7 with me and started work on a track in Groove Rider 2, which I later finished at home. (See attached.) Was very easy to carry with me, and I only used 7% battery while producing in GR2 for an hour.

Cubasis 3, my goto DAW of choice for genres outside of EDM and HipHop, also fits comfortably on the Mini 7's screen. When I was doing Jamuary last month, I'd often visit this local coffee shop (not Starbucks, lol) and produce Ambient there. Was rather lovely.

And I could do this since the Mini 7 is so light in weight. Just an excellent device overall.

If you have any questions, do let me know.

I use the mini as my main groove making device too. Love it. So much easier to handle at this size. There are drawbacks but I’d rather learn to adapt for the convenience of the size. I also use an external midi keyboard when I want more space.

  • Huge difference with working with iPad Pro and mini. The weight and size is a huge factor if traveling and holding it in hand.

Koala is perfect on iPad mini to me. Logic pro for me was good on mini but downfall was always opening and then closing menus for space to work. Gadget, Beathawk and bm3 was amazing on mini.

My only complaints was speaker sound was def quieter on mini but headphones clear that up and brightness in sunlight was a challenge.

I’m really thinking of downgrading from pro to mini again.

I love my SMK-25 and wouldn't trade that for the world. :) Great MIDI keyboard. Yeah, I'm with ya. I'd rather adapt for the convenience of the size and weight of the Mini.

Same on the MVave it’s got a great feel to the keys.

    This! ☝️ As a pianist, I agree.

  • I was always a fan of the Mini and used it until Apple removed the headphones jack, so I switched to a second hand iPad 9 until Apple make music on iPads great again.
They've brought back the good stuff on the Macbooks and I hope they will do the same on the iPads one day.
