Who uses Chat GPT to help write lyrics?
So today I put the first verse of a song I was working on into Chat GPT to see if it would get my juices flowing. It wasn’t too horrible. Does anybody else here stoop that low???
Comments
As someone who can't write lyrics to save my life, I'd be tempted. I think I'd feel I cheated myself in the end.
My immediate reaction to what I just said was "Yet, you would happily work in a band with someone else writing lyrics."
My reaction to that is I would feel some human connection to the other person. It isn't the same with a machine. It's just data.
Conclusion: No. I would not do it unless I was in a situation where I was being paid to create a song. Then I'd do it in a heartbeat (but not feel much satisfaction from it.)
P.S. I'm not characterizing it as stooping to some low level. I'm only saying it doesn't fit with how and why I personally create.
I have no problem using generative music services. Output from the various models can range from terrible to mindblowingly good. But I've found even the most inept of prompts can usually result in something completely listenable these days. In short, if you're not a lyricist, they have you covered. If you are a lyricist, that also works. I've written my own lyrics for many years, but sometimes it's just more fun to let the system do it for you. Occasionally some real gems show up.
And the wildest part? These services have only been around a very short while. I almost can't imagine how good they'll be in another year.
Best services I've found so far:
I don't, but sometimes I use ChatGPT as a random prompt generator. I'll ask it "Key, Tempo, Genre", etc, and specify "choose completely at random", and then go from there. 😂 That's really about it.
If I did use ChatGPT to help me with lyrics, I'd almost certainly use it as a jumping off point rather than the "end all, be all". It's like having ChatGPT generate clay to mold and shape it into whatever you want it to be, if that makes any sense.
I use ChatGPT as a writing assistant for my work (marketing, where writing is a commodity, not art).
I rarely use the raw output of the GPT unless I'm using a highly trained custom GPT for a narrow purpose, like making a LinkedIn post out of an article. The accuracy of the communication is what matters, not that it's hand written.
What I do when I'm writing something meaningful (i.e., I'm writing by hand) is use ChatGPT to get around blockages in my thought process. It'll suggest ideas that sometimes are almost the right thing. I refine the output from there to arrive at something that is the accurate and authentic expression of what I'm trying to say.
The refining step is critical to preserving the notion that it is a creative process. Simply taking what the bot turns out and claiming it as your own is an empty gesture, both legally and ethically. But using it as a highly targeted means to overcome writer's block and get back to the creative process is valid, IMO.
It's like asking your friend's opinion, but faster. You can also still ask your friend, and should.
Eat out? Open a package? Cook your own? Invent your own recipe? Grow your own food and cook it? Use a microwave? Cook over a camp fire?
It's all good.
I enjoy cooking.
I would enjoy growing my own food more if I was better at it.
I’ve used Grok to help me get starter ideas for ambient songs. I thought it would bother me but the ideas were good and I just modified them a bit to get started on the track.
Yes - I use ChatGPT for lyrics.
What I find works for me is:
Absolutely not, in no way ever would I EVER think about doing this. I love writing lyrics.
There you go, you have half the lyrics for a Talking Heads song already.
👍
😂
Being a clone I have no flaws to identify
Even this doggerel that pours from my pen
has just been written by another twenty
telepathic men
Word for word it says
"Oh, for the wings of any bird other than a
battery hen"
Spirit of the Age/Hawkwind
I’m doing exactly this. Being a sell out is giving me kind of a cheap thrill.
