£45 (at least) of GeoShred iap gone missing... 😒

Hey all, ok obviously it's the developer I need to contact about this but I'm just dropping it here to ask if anyone else has had IAP vanish from their GeoShred?

And further that, I just wanna express my frustration with it... It's never been the cleareast app offering in its purchasing/pricing schemes....

Having to chase up missing things you've paid for really should not be part of your process when you want to start making music off the block.

Basically as some might know, my ipad was MIA for a series of months on and off (usb-c port).

When I got it home finally, 96 app update ennsued. GeoShred has lost my Pro upgrade, Cello, Clarinet, Oboe.

I never removed the app before I put into the shop, is been on there the whole time, but obviously an update / change somewhere along the line has cooked it.

I really think, that if this kind of big change has happened at some point, customers should be informed by email if possible?

Ok. Rant over for now.
-Anyone else had this?

  • This says GeoShred play. Are you sure you don’t also have a GeoShred pro app that’s separate?

  • Have you opened standalone and tried to restore purchases? I've had a few glitches with it saying it is not installed at all before but haven't had any issues with any of the IAP.

  • @SkillipEvolver : I would recommend contacting their tech support if restore purchases in the standalone doesn’t solve the problem. In my experience, their customer service is good. Also, double-check your purchase receipt to see in which of their apps you purchased the IAP.

Their customer service is great, yes, really the best there is. If there's a mistake on their end it will be fixed, rest easy @SkillipEvolver

  • To be honest, I do find it a bit confusing..
I've been back through my purchase history, and I can see that I purchased
GeoShred Play Upgrade (twice it seems!)

And then there is also: GeoShred Pro? (is this different to the GeoShred Play upgrade?)

Just to clarify, I seem to have bought the Play upgrade twice (somehow), once in Dec 202, then again in July 2021

-all I can think of with that one 👆 is that they possibly rename the app?? (or perhaps i reset my iPad at some point, then purchased it again (thinking that I hadn't in the past))

And my history shows purchase also of:
    GeoClarinet
    GeoOboe
    GeoFlute
    GeoCello

I figure I must have had the Pro or 'Play upgrade' fiunctioning fully, as I wouldn't have been able to play any of those instruments otherwise. 👆

@Gavinski what might be the best way to contact the developer? If the current email address associated with them on their Developer profile is recent (App Store), I'll try there?

thanks for the reply here. 🙏

Which of the apps have you tried? There are 3 apps - Geoshred Control, Geoshred Play and Geoshred Pro. You can upgrade Control to Play and then to Pro with IAP. You can upgrade Play to Pro with IAP.

If you have bought an upgrade to Play level it sounds like you started out with the Geoshred Control app which is free. Have you tried downloading that one and seeing if the IAP restore?

  • @SkillipEvolver I can't remember whether the email I use is a personal one or not so won't share it, I'm sure details on their site or appstore etc will be up to date for you to contact them. This sounds like user error in some way tbh, but they'll get to the bottom of it for sure

  • It looks like you have play upgraded to pro.

Several years ago I had to switch from G-play to G-pro cause I won a swam code that wouldn’t work on GeoPlay, so I had to refund my G-Play to G-Pro Upgrade, and bought G-Pro.

I’m not sure exactly why but it seemed like all the upgrades through Geo-Play app added complexity and issues, as opposed to going through the G-Pro app.

  • I had this happen, and their customer support was excellent - apparently i had a very unusual store issue but they didn't give up on tracking down my purchase history and were quick to resolve the issue.

Further, with regard to the different versions of GeoShred.

    • GeoShred Pro (Green Icon) - iOS/iPadOS has all the editing features, MIDI and AUv3.

    • GeoShred Play (Blue Icon). - Just the playing surface and presets, no Editors, MIDI, no AUv3. Cost reduced. This is the most popular GeoShred, for people who just want to play an instrument. It can be upgraded to GeoShred Play+Pro which is identical to GeoShred Pro.

    • GeoShred Control (Orange Icon). A free MIDI/MPE controller based on GeoShred. I'm the chairman of the MPE Committee within the MIDI Association, and as a give back to the community we made this free as a way to make an MPE controller available to anyone with an iOS/iPadOS device. It can be upgraded to GeoShred Control+Pro which is identical to GeoShred Pro.

    • GeoShred Studio (Gold Icon), the macOS version of GeoShred for scoring, composing and desktop workflow. As with all GeoShreds with MIDI, it can be performed from GeoShred's isomorphic keyboard using iOS/iPadOS device and our client/server protocol "GeoShred Send/Receive". As with all GeoShreds, with MIDI, you can also perform GeoShred Studio with a conventional keyboard, and MPE controller or a wind controller.

Here is a flyer that compares the different GeoShreds:
    https://www.moforte.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/GeoShred-7-Brochure-1.pdf

Here is the standard pricing table. Note that these prices change when we do discount campaigns.

One might ask, If I upgrade GeoShred Play or GeoShred Control to the functionality of Pro, why is it Play+Pro and NOT Pro. Essentially Apple does not allow developers to convert one app to another. It's a security issue, to prevent trojan horse exploits using Apps. So if you upgrade Play to Play+Pro, it's still Play (Blue icon).

Further that means that that IAPs don't migrate between versions of GeoShred. So IAPs for Pro don't appear in Play. This is because Apple locks the IAPs to the App where they were purchased.

We don't like it, but those are Apple's rules.

  • Hi MoForte.👋, thank you for weighing in and supporte a customer here.

I think I managed to work out what happened. … I believe at some point, I created a new Apple ID. Probably around the time my iPad went in for a service (for some reason).

And I think, when it returned to m, I began to use my new account with it.

Thus, older apps I had purchase (around 10 or so) from years past, were stuck in my old Apple account/ID.

According to news (around NMov 2024), they finally made it possible to transfer apps btwn accounts, although not the iAP.

—logging out of my new acc, into my old one, I was then able to update those 10or so apps, including Restore Purchases within GeoShred.

So that’s pretty much solved it I think.

I still think I might have paid twice somehow for the Pro upgrade however, so following your. Invite to email, I’ll do what you requested and send something there from now on.

Thank you (everyone), and thank you MoForte.

  • There is some funkiness for me with geoshred as well. I upgraded play to pro and now sometimes I have to go into the standalone while having internet access to find my instrument IAPs. I have seen somewhere (maybe the MoForte site)- that there can be some funkiness if you have multiple versions like play, pro, etc installed at once. I still have funkiness sometimes and don’t know why even though deleted all but pro. Need internet connection to get IAPs back when it happens and sometimes it just has no sound until I do that. Curious if anyone else has experienced this.

Yes, I've experienced the same and to be honest I would worry about using it live because I never know when it will happen.
I won't have internet access on my iPads when out and about.

@moForte Do you know what could possibly trigger the purchased IAPs getting lost?
Thanks a lot for chiming in here, and thumbs up for your work in the MPE Committee!!

If your AppleID changes, and you have a GeoShred installed from an older AppleID, then the IAPs will not be visible because the App Store reciept for your new AppleID will not show the ownership of the IAPs. I'll have an eye on it and try to give you as much information as I can when this happens again. Like @bpert said, it usually works offline, no problem, but a few times in the past it happened that after launching the app, the IAPs were just gone and needed to be restored.

Is it possible that an app update resets the IAP data? Particularly if it's a Control or Play version that's been upgraded to Pro? I'd want to recheck everything right after updating.

I don't think that is what is going on. We have that use case in our test plan. Whenever an app update occurs, be it pro, play or control, GeoShred makes a call to the Apple App Store (StoreKit) to check for IAPs. If the network connection fails at the end of the app update it's possible that the IAPs might not be visible. But note at any time you can always go to the store and manually restore purchases by tapping on the "Restore Purchases" button.

A comment about "Restore Purchases". We did not invent this, it's a part of the Apple App Store storeKit. Lots of apps that have IAPs have a "Restore Purchases" button. They are all doing the same thing. Making a simple call to the Apple App Store storeKit to restore any purchases. It's possible that Apple has edge cases where purchases are sometimes not restored. If there is a good reproducible case we can file a bug with Apple, but Apple can take forever to response to bug reports.

If your IAPs disappear, please contact us ([email protected]) so that we can try to isolate a reproducible case to file with Apple. That being said, restarting GeoShred and tapping on "Restore Purchases" should fix the problem.

  • edited March 9

@moForte I suspect that it's rather about the way you're handling IAPs than about Apple's StoreKit because I never saw IAPs getting lost in other apps. An app update won't destroy the data in the app's data storage (only deleting the app will) so if you're using a safe way to store and expand IAPs locally, they shouldn't get lost, not even with a failed network connection after an app update.
But maybe there's more to it, who knows ;)
