Please help me figure out why my interface won't show up on my ipad

Hello, longtime lurker first time poster. For years I used a Xsonic xTone to input my audio into Aum and GarageBand. It doesn't have individual gain knobs or some other features so I decided to try my behringer umc 204HD interface with the iPad. Would not show up in Aum, GarageBand, or logic. Tried a couple different USB hubs, even got an arturia minifuse 2. None of them work with the iPad though it seems they should. I'm very frustrated as I have no idea what the issue is.

Here is my current set up: 9th gen iPad running on 18.3.1
a uni 8-1 USB hub recommended by Jakob haq
an arturia minifuse 2 which claims to be class compliant and to work with ipads.

the iPad is plugged into the host port of the hub via the lightning - USB c cable that came with either my iPhone or iPad.

The minifuse is plugged into the hub with the USB cable that came with the minifuse.

The hub is plugged into the wall with a 20w power supply. This is the part I haven't changed out yet but it seems to be powering both the minifuse and charging the iPad.

I have tried multiple different cables and as mentioned, two different hubs, and another interface. That leads me to think it is the iPad but I don't know why that would be.

Any one ever have a similar issue or have some things to try? Or recommendations on where to seek help if not

Thanks!

@Aster1sk : with a lightning iPad, you need a lightning USB camera adapter. Those lightning to usb-c cables don’t work for this in my experience.

  • When using multiple devices with the iPad it's a good idea to use a power supply with a bit more power...
...20w is barely enough run charge and run the iPad especially when you add more devices.

Personally I use a 65w charger connected to the PD port of my USB 'dongle' and it powers most devices without any issues.
I had some power-related issues using a 30w changer with a lot of devices connected.

So the first thing I would try is to use a power supply that provides more than 20w.

This is an iPad 9. It is a lightning device.

Oops, then I have no ideas on how to provide more power other than getting a powered hub the provides enough juice...

I don’t think power is the issue. I think it is a matter of using the right adapter.

  • Thanks, @espiegel123 and @Samu. I wonder why the usb-c to lightning would be the problem.

I actually do have a lightning camera adaptor because my piano connects with a usb-b. But I don't have an Apple usb-a to USB-c cable to use with it. I'll get one next.

Just tried a non-apple usb-a to usb-c 2 with the camera adaptor but the cable doesn't seem compatible with the iPad at all. Not even power.

Could be, one thing I do have experience with is that with the iPhone 8 using some Lightning -> USB-C cables they only charge but do not transmit any data so a Lightning CCK is needed. I do have one no-brand Lightning -> USB-C cable that I use to transfer images from my iPhone 8 to the iPadPro but I can NOT use the same cable to connect to a USB-C hub and have to use a CCK (with a USB-A to USB-C adapter) to do that.

In this example a plain Lightning -> USB-C cable is being used so a CCK might be needed to make this work.

All that I can tell you is that a number of people have reported that lightning to usb-c cables don't work for this purpose and were successful when they switched to the USB 3 Camera Adapter (often called the CCK which was an earlier adapter without the lightning power input.)

  • Am I correct that apple doesn't make usb-a to usb-c cords? So I would connect the iPad to the lightning CCK then a third party usb-a to usb-c(that does data transfer) into the hub?

I don't know if USB-C hubs can connect via a USB-C to USB-A cable. I have a USB A hub for use with my lightning iPad. My USB-C hub I use only with my USB-C iPad. The USB-C hub I have has USB-A ports on it.

  • Mine has usb-a ports on the sides but the connection for the host device is a usb-c port

I don't know if that can be made to work. It might. I just don't know. Btw, the lightning to USB-C cable that I have was intended for being able to charge a lightning iPhone from a USB-C power supply.

I have used a hub with a USB-C host port with a USBC to USBA adapter (not cable) into the Apple USB-3 to Lightning adapter and it worked.

USBC Host port > USBC to USBA adapter > USBA to Lightning Cable > iPad 9th Generation

It worked, though I don't like the instability of having that little adapter in there.

[edit] I did have to apply power to the hub or to the USB-3 Lightning adapter to make it work, even though connecting my interface directly to the USB-3 Lightning adapter normally works without added power. I assume this is due to additional power consumption from the hub itself.

  • I just want to add that one should not expect to supply power to a Lightning iPad through the USB-A port on the Lightning adapter. The only way to do that is to supply power to the Lightning port on the adapter.

  • Thanks, everyone. I have tried all you have recommended and still can't get it working. Also tried it on using 8th gen iPad. Nothing with either CCK I have. I tried the system on my friends new iphone with a USB c and the interface showed up and worked perfectly so I am certain that it is the connection between the hub and the iPad that is the issue.

The last thing I can think to try is a adaptor with a female USB c to lightning connector. I didn't imagine this would be so difficult.

Do people actually use an audio interface with lightning iPads? Is it normal for it to be this finicky?

I've never had a single problem in years and years of using lightning iPads.

    Are your CCK's from Apple?

Lots of people use audio interfaces with lightning iPads.

Which USB Camera Adapter do you have (what you are calling a cck)?

Have you tried interface direct to “cck” with power going into the cck’s lightning port?

It is possible that your cck is not working correctly.

  • Hi,

Could it be his 18.3.1 os?

  • edited March 8

My camera connection kit is an Apple one and it does work perfectly in other uses. I use it to connect to an electric piano and to a xsonic xtone interface. Directly powering it without the hub does not work either.

@FlowingRobes the iPad is at 18.3.1 Does that introduce issues?

  • @wim @espiegel123 Thanks so much for your time troubleshooting with me. Can you just recommend me a powered hub that you know works with a lightning iPad?
