JWM - Keep It Simple (Acid-Inspired EDM in CB3 on iPhone)

So at the restaurant I perform piano at, I finished supper early and had an hour to kill. So I started work on this piece of music on my iPhone in Cubasis 3. Once home after my gig, I finished the piece, airdropped it to my iPad, and uploaded it to Soundcloud.

I used Koala Sampler for the drums and effects. The deep bass is from FM Classics, and the Acid bass is Troublemaker. The Hoover synth stabs are from Poison-202. Finally, I selected a sound from NeoFM for adding just an extra background layer.

Mastered with Grand Finale 2 and Cubasis' Brickwall Limiter set to -1dB. Used Youlean's Loudness Meter to ensure the levels were up to around -14LuFS. Cheers and enjoy. :)

    Pure curiosity for learning purposes:

Since already using Grand Finale 2, why not just utilize that built in LuF meter?

Because I follow Grand Finale 2 with Cubasis' Brickwall Limiter set at -1dB. I'm unsure if the LuFS readout from GF2 would be accurate before the Brickwall Limiter. Plus, I always get a more accurate reading from Youlean's Loudness Meter.

Ok, dope thanks! (Didn't know if there was issues or anything with GF's meter or anything)

No problem mate. No issues with GF2's meter here. Just me going about mastering in my own unique way. 😄

  • Awesome song man
    Very acidic

I know what you mean about GF2 limiter (most people know I’m a cb3+gf2 nut as well dude so I dig your workflow) not to be trusted. -LUFS works fine; but your throw brick wall in front just to make sure it STAYS under your dB rather than peaks/touches it

Thanks mate! :) Yeah I really dig how this one turned out.

Exactly mate. GF2 is amazing, but sometimes there'll be a stray peak or transient that sneaks past it, hence why I use the brickwall limiter set to -1dB. 😅 -1dB is the amount of headroom I prefer for my mastered tracks to avoid unwanted distortion when converting to a lossy format.

Such as when uploading a track to Soundcloud, it seems to convert a perfectly fine wav file into its own lossy format, at least for playback. And I refuse to subscribe to Soundcloud Go when I already use the Pro subscription for unlimited uploading. 😂 So if I want to listen to my uploaded music on the go, I make sure to leave that -1dB headroom.

  • Hmmm turns out I don't have a standalone limiter

Any recommendations towards a Brickwall analogous of the AUV3 variety?

NoLimits 2. Only difference between that and Cubasis' Brickwall limiter is for NoLimits2, I adjust the gain to +1dB and the output to -1dB. :)

I mean Jim’s method is optimal, brick wall works man, Jim is just giving himself some insurance with the headroom, totally makes sense to do it his way , as i do the same thing

Well, I'd say my method is optimal for me personally. Others may use other apps for mastering, lol. But, I'll say that the music sounds better to my ears with -1dB headroom. :)

  • Sure man
All I’m saying is I have done exactly what you did without consulting you ( called parallel development to anyone who cares besides a nerd like me)

So in supporting “your” method I was really just self aggrandizement in the most subtly egotistical way you could imagine; I needed an ego boost you could say lmao

Ahhhh see another self sustaining joke of self deprecation only subtle enough for those keen on such nuances

Making jokes with oneself to look back on in years to come

Awesome track. Love the way it just keeps bouncing along.

And now I find myself having to purchase No Limits 2 (was a fan of No Limits for my iPhone...Now I must get the latest new shiny version).

No Limits 2 is worth it! So is Grand Finale 2.

  • @jwmmakerofmusic I'll need to spend some more time with Grande Finale 2. I've had it for ages but typically either use Fab Filter plugins on my iPad or Tone Boosters + No Limits on my iPhone.

Nice! :) Well, Grand Finale 2 is a bit of a "cheat code". I usually use EDM Punch preset, but prefer now the Acoustic Nice preset. Either way, I make sure my levels are to -14LuFS. :)

  • Well, my ignorance is quelled once again. I thought Brickwall was a plugin name, not a general descriptor. Snagged TB Barracade (heh, yeah $4 is enough of a difference at this moment) and it's already helping a LOT with my LuFs problems!

I also grabbed Youlean for final doublecheck on that magical -14 number, and it's easy as pie

Question- can I have it stopped at -14 as a standard, or should I be aiming for -14.1 (or give any cushion) to be safe? Or should the Brickwall at -14 have me set proper?

I feel silly for misunderstanding both the use of limiters and Youlean over other things I was trying xD

Cue The More You Know star

    Thanks for the great advice!

Ooo, Barricade is definitely quite the lovely plugin. :) Works on iPad and iPhone.

Exactly! You needn't get the IAP either for the graphs. (I did, because I wanted to support Youlean, and the graphs do come in handy, lol. But really all one needs are the numbers.)

Okay, so here's how I do it mate. I have Grand Finale 2, followed by the brickwall set to +1dB gain and -1dB reduction, and Youlean following that. If Youlean hits around -14LuFS (give or take 0.3 LuFS), you're golden!

I feel silly for misunderstanding both the use of limiters and Youlean over other things I was trying xD

No need to feel silly, especially if you have the legit questions you do and need anything cleared up. I'm here to help. :)

Always mate. :) And if you have more questions, don't hesitate to ask. The only "dumb question" there is is the one never asked. ;)

Dope, that’s the master chain I have running currently. Out of curiosity, why push the gain +1dB and only reduce output by the same amount?

Also, if I have the limiter set for the -14, can that be saved and used as a standard used preset? Or is it extremely dependent on setting up per song as I go?

Eh, it's usually how I do things. 😂 You can get the signal to -14LuFS without pushing the gain +1dB.

Also, if I have the limiter set for the -14, can that be saved and used as a standard used preset? Or is it extremely dependent on setting up per song as I go?

It's more dependent, where one of GF2's presets suffices as a starting point, and the input knob is your friend. 😉
