Sound design : “how to make that sound?!”

Hello, I have a sound design challenge if anyone wants to indulge me. :)

Can anyone get a sound close to the main riff on this track?

( I think it might be sampled bass guitar but it could equally be a synth processed to sound like one?? It seems simple enough but I could never quite nail the tone… I wonder if it was processed with an MS-10/20 perhaps or guitar pedals?)

Anyway here it is…an oldie but a goodie!

    Great track. I doubt I’ll figure it out, but think I’ll try. At first listen it seems like a distorted bass guitar run through a low pass filter with high resonance, or a flanger, then low passed a time or two. 🤔

  • It reminded me of this plugin by Reason (Propellerhead).

    Now what to combine on iPad, I don't know but one gets a few hints/directions on the Scream panel.

  • @iamspoon Yes, definitely sounds like a bass guitar, you could probably get close with Izotope Trash https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/izotope-trash/id6475314304
    @Pxlhg I love Scream 4

    I had no idea Trash is on iPad. (Then again I used to be iPhone-only. 😅 ) But now I want the full unlock. I used to use Trash in FL Studio on PC.

    Distorted bass with cutoff low was my immediate feeling. Yeah, some very slight phase/flange/wah sweep

  • Thanks for the input B)

    Yeah, it certainly has a nice distorted & resonant/harmonic quality.
    That is what made me think of an ms-20 used as an effects unit using the ESP section.
    There’s also a nice fluency to the rhythm where it slightly lags behind on the changes… not so much as to sound out of time but certainly it creates a groove and contributes to the overall effect of a live/played instrument.

    It’s taken me 30 years and I’m still left wondering about this sound. None of my friends care about this stuff so it’s nice to hear people’s ideas!

    first paragraph.

    filtered guitar.

    Most of it’s character is given by analog distortion type (maybe something like Rat ? just my wild guess.. my bets are it’s some analog ovedrive/distortion pedal)
