We need a great live sequencer
So, here we are, 4 years after the 1st iPad.
The iPad air 2 with its 3 cores and 2gig of ram can crunch as many numbers as the the MacBook Air,
we are finally ready to roll.
But there still is no sequencer in sight that fits my needs.
I want to do stuff live and not record instrument after instrument into tracks, if I could use it live on stage that would be perfect.
something like ableton live version 5 with 8 tracks would do it for me. Some drum sampler, a more beafy sampler a few fx and be able to seq 2 synth apps - something along these lines
any thoughts on this, anyone?
is there a version of the elastique code for mobile? I have no clue ...
so let's discuss it, any thoughts welcome.

I know, I sound like a drunk parrot: Nanostudio is actually mostly there already. Check out Ani's stuff
YouTube embeds seem broken so here's a link
And here's another video
Hopefully NS2 will have a beefier sampler and the ability to loop recorded audio live. It could use some more MIDI control as well for stuff like metronome on/off in a live sequencing scenario.
yep still no ableton-esk or MRL-esk app for ios but I'd say keep praying and maybe the kymatica fairies will hear you.
I know what's on the market on iOS, I'm making music on iOS since version 4, and all that's meh, cubasis, genome, Auria, nano studio ...
To be frank I think all that sucks monkeys balls. It's nice to beat a track together with those while you are on a train ride or something, but there is no fun workhorse, that's the problem.
I don't mind paying 100 or 200 dollars but it's has to deliver, I know I'm not alone with this.
I want to be able to say goodbye to my laptop for creating music ...
Tabletop is pretty good for live. I have not had a crash since the last update, but you need a mini retina or above to be stable.
dont get me started talking about retronyms
lol
@lala: I was thinking the same for a long time and there is a simple answer. It doesn't exist on iOS. Why don't use your Laptop and control it via iPad f.e. A full blown DAW will not work on iOS anytime soon. I think NS2 could be a big hit but will it beat a full blown DAW.... i can't believe. And we don't have to talk about iOS 8......
Maybe an OS X tablet would be the right thing
Or a Windows tablet with Ableton Live.
You did say any thoughts. =P
There is no technical reason anymore why u couldn't develop something kick ass on iOS, the rumors about a 12" iPad also won't stop ...
os x is nice, I'm using it since 15 years, but it's not multitouch, nore is the software
Have you tried all the sequencers on iOS? Which one comes closest to what you're looking for?
Isequence, lol, hello Jaroslaw (I know he is reading this)
iSequence is closer to what you described in your original post than Nanostudio? Did you watch the Ani videos?
Tony Saunders has been working on a new sequencer. No, it's not a new version of his Analog Midi Sequencer (aka midiSequencer) - totally new app. Hit him up while he's still in the idea stage.
Workflow wise triple yes, but nano and Isequence are old, they were made on the iPad1 on iOS 4 ... Never used nano much, but it was one of the good apps at its time
@ lala: The biggest limit is that apps can only have 2GB in the store. 2GB ram is still far to less and the cpu is good but..... not enough In theory you' re right. If someone would make a DAW for iPad Air 2 and above in the future there could be a Logic Light or something like that but it still would lack a proper data folders, connections and (in my case) big sample libraries are doesn't exist for iOS. Synth works would be fine i think. But the biggest bummer is still just one instance of an app.... if that could change.... I often dream from a Surface OS X which runs native OS X and iOS via bootcamp. Ipad pro?..... I have the feeling it's a mysterious thing like the Apple TV which never comes to live (and that's good . Still not sure if i want to hold an 12" iPad over my head while lying on the couch.
i didn't think he was talking about a daw I thought he was talking about a real performance sequencer and sample triggering?
That was in another thread, yep.... But i agree with @lala. It would be time for full versions. Not only light or limited apps. Alchemy should be run in full on an iPad Air 2. The coming Synthmaster will also be only the player version. But maybe those will be the first to be a full blown desktop class apps if they are ready to get it on.
I don't need gigabytes of samples in the ram, I used to run live 5.2 on an iBook g4 ...
That was 1,4 ghz ppc 512 mb ram and a 40 gb hd, lol
so spec wise I'm fine now
and don't I want to fire much loops or tracks, most of what I do is midi, so I can change my mind at anytime without having to start over again...
edit: I just looked my hole sample lib does fit into 1 gb - extra stuff is added into the track if needed
Every time I see it I'm impressed by iSequence HD. Can you record unquantized to 16ths?
No it's grid only, that's where it's age starts showing
I think I spend a hole year just hammering stuff into sequence hd, Im still using that material to export loops from it
U should try play this step (of all 8 tracks at the same time )on touch with it -still blows my head off
<
p>edit: the option is called change playback position on touch, u let your loop play, if u do nothing it's just plays the loop step after step, if u touch a step it plays that quantized to the grid and then the next steps right to it or whatever u touch then, u can go totally crazy with multitouch with this in a controlled way u play your song and then u think hm, bored now let's play(!) a break now with whatever parts are running now
it was really the first app where I thought fuck yeah
it's the mother of my multitouch obsession, lol
Time to go full laptop. Don't forget the plastic wrap.
^^
Just checked Isequence. Looks interesting but does it still have no chords? You have to use multiple tracks for chords. And does it have midi out?
