I agree 100%. My own AI classification experiments were stuck at maybe 70..80% hit rate, not the least because even for humans, for classifying a sound as snare vs clap vs percussive hit, there isn't always a distinct/correct answer.
Even systems that claim to have a higher hit rate often fail when throwing a wide spectrum of percussive sounds at them.
But hey, better than nothing 😅

    Lol, fair.

Yeah I've seen it from tools like FXpansion Geist, which is much older of course, to newer AI-based tools. Claps, snares, and other things that aren't so far off sort of make sense to me. But in I think every tool I've used there will be at least a few cases where while the waveform by eyeball does indeed look very similar to a snare, the actual sound is completely different.

It mostly makes me think that a bit more training with examples like that would allow the AI functions to build recognition of harmonic patterns or other more subtle characteristics that would allow it to filter those cases out better. Of course, that takes a lot more time, work, and a decent pool of examples for training, so it's not surprising to understand why.

  • After taking time to get a vocal chain established and Loopy Pro setup with all inputs and buses I wanted, I got a chance to start a new song from the base template I've been hammering together, and got to play with Helium MIDI Sequencer in that as well.

While maybe not perfect, it's really dang close to what I envisioned and is highly serviceable once configured in Loopy Pro. The only real pain points so far are a) because it's not built into Loopy, it's very easy to forget to turn rec off when hiding it to record the sequenced audio from a synth. That will probably just take muscle memory, but I've unintentionally added weird MIDI CC parts and wondered what on earth was happening. b) I find myself reaching for the Novation Summit for a lot of different sounds, from bass, to leads, to pads rather than the Digitone or Minitaur. That's not bad, but as it only has a single MIDI channel, I've gotten into the habit of just shifting the looper range in Helium by the measures needed for the next piece in order to preserve sequenced pieces will adding new ones for a new sound on the same synth. I don't know a better way to do that that wouldn't involve some manual intervention itself, like a switch to change translate the MIDI channel to another, while still continuing to output Channel 1 as part of the Thru from Helium (I don't have a MIDI merge box lying around, just one splitter for return to all the external gear, which is fine).

But outside that, it is now quite easier to start a new project that is automatically dervied from the base template, get a quick kick loop in for tempo (find this more controllable for tempo than voice first), and then start adding vocal and synth layers, making adjustments and re-recording along the way.

It feels like a good way to work, though if I'm honest I feel like it's a miracle I've gotten so close to what I envisioned as workflow, and that it is working roughly the way I thought it would. Pretty happy stuff.

Very much appreciate all the help I've received getting things setup, it's helped expedite the process exponentially.
